Today, on International Nurses Day, I want to acknowledge and celebrate nurses everywhere for the compassion, strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication they bring every single day. 💕

As a nurse, I feel incredibly proud to be part of such a meaningful profession and am truly privileged to walk alongside people through some of the most vulnerable, emotional, and life-changing moments of their lives. Nursing is so much more than healthcare — it is compassion, human connection, and meeting people where they are with dignity, empathy, and care.

As Florence Nightingale once said:
“Were there none who were discontented with what they have, the world would never reach anything better.”
Her words reflect the vision, courage, and determination that inspire nurses to keep striving for better care, better outcomes, and a better future for all.

Today, I reflect with gratitude on the lives touched, the lessons learned, and the incredible privilege it is to care for others. To all nurses — thank you for the extraordinary difference you make every single day ✨

Well I’m sure that I’m not the only one to say 2025 has been a big year. There have been some really high highs, and some particularly low lows, to say the least.

Over the past few months, I’ve felt a quiet but persistent nudge to stop. To take a break, a breath. To come back to myself.

I recently read a post that summarised exactly how it felt to keep going, how the world tells us to keep pushing, and how stopping can actually be growth.

In the wise words of …
“There is a kind of stopping that feels like torture to our souls… because it is.

The world teaches you to never quit.

It rewards the ones who push through pain, who grind harder, who refuse to bow.

And that’s fine… until it isn’t.

The greatest power is not endless motion, it is the courage to stop when stopping feels like the hardest thing in the world.”

So with a lot of courage, I’ve made the decision to take an indefinite break from my clinical work at Balance Women’s Health. I need to refill my cup, and take some meaningful and intentional space for myself - pausing my appointments for new clients while I reflect on what the next part of the journey looks like.

This pause isn’t about walking away from the work I love - it’s about making sure I can continue doing it in a more sustainable and whole-hearted way.

I am so grateful for each and every one of you that I have had the pleasure and privilege of walking alongside. I am still here in the background cheering you on and celebrating your wins. You are all incredible!

Improving your period doesn’t need to be complicated. With hormonal balancing diets, endless supplements or cycle-synching hacks, it can all feel overwhelming.

The real secret to improving your period lies in the habits that you do every day.

🌱 Manage stress
Prioritise daily relaxation practices and minimise unnecessary stressors.

🌱 Reduce Inflammation
Reduce inflammation by limiting processed foods & alcohol. Avoid refined carbs and added sugar, vegetable oils and food additives. Prioritise whole, nutrient-dense meals rich in colourful fruit and vegetables.

🌱 Increase your fibre
Fibre helps to balance blood sugar, as well as eliminating excess hormones.

🌱 Prioritise your sleep
Not getting enough sleep increases cortisol as well as disrupts insulin sensitivity, which can throw other hormones out of balance.

🌱 Get moving
Regular movement reduces cortisol as well as supports blood sugar levels. Choose movement that you enjoy which boosts your endorphins which are a great mood booster, and is a natural pain relief.

It’s human nature to want to change everything at once, however small consistent changes build long term sustainable habits x

So many women I see think that oestrogen is the most important hormone when it comes to hormonal balance. They spend a lot of time focusing on trying to “fix” this, and blame it for their symptoms. While it is one of our key hormones, let’s not forget some of the other important (and sometimes overlooked) hormones that are essential for our overall health and wellbeing.
Here’s an overview of our key hormones and their roles:

✨Oestrogen: Oestrogen is a key female hormone responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle, supporting reproductive health, and maintaining bone density. It also plays a role in mood and brain health, skin health, and cardiovascular function.

✨Progesterone: Progesterone is a hormone that helps regulate the menstrual cycle and supports pregnancy. It balances oestrogen levels and plays a key role in preparing the uterus for implantation and maintaining pregnancy.
Progesterone is only produced following ovulation. It also has positive benefits for mood, metabolism and bone health.
Ovulation is incredibly important for overall health - if we don’t ovulate, we don’t produce progesterone.

✨Testosterone: Testosterone is often thought of as a male hormone, but it’s also important for women. It helps regulate libido, muscle mass, energy levels, and bone density, and plays a role in mood and cognitive function.

✨Cortisol: Cortisol is the body’s primary stress hormone, produced by the adrenal glands. It helps regulate metabolism, immune function, and blood sugar levels, but chronic stress can lead to dysregulation, affecting energy, sleep, and immune health.

✨Insulin: Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar levels. It allows cells to absorb glucose for energy or storage, and imbalances in insulin can lead to conditions like insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

With so much information out there, it can be confusing about what hormonal balance actually means. Here’s some common hormone myths:

1. The pill regulates your hormones: The pill actually suppresses your body’s natural hormones and replaces them with synthetic versions.

2. Hormones themselves are to blame: Your hormones are not the sole cause of imbalances or symptoms and instead are responding to other factors such as stress, inflammation and nutrient deficiencies.

3. Hormonal imbalances exist in isolation: Your hormones work together like a finely tuned orchestra, so if one is out of balance, the others tend to follow. That’s why a whole person approach is best to manage these.

It’s been more than a hot minute since I last posted on social media!

While my social media content has been lacking, life certainly hasn’t. Here’s a snapshot of the things that have been happening at Balance ❤️

It has been heartwarming to support so many new clients and helping them achieve their health goals, and celebrating all the wins along the way. Every single client inspires me to learn more so that I can ensure that they are getting the most up to date information regarding their specific health concerns.

Several months ago I had an opportunity to work in Samoa to provide healthcare to children and young people in schools. From screening and health checks, to providing education and health promotion, it was an incredible experience to also support a local school and community to enhance the wellbeing of their students.

Back in New Zealand, I’ve also had the privilege to present to several organisations who are dedicated to improving Women’s Health in the workplace. Thanks to those organisations for inviting me to chat about all things hormones and Women’s Health!

It is so important that while I support women finding their balance and enhancing their health and wellbeing, I also practice what I preach. Prioritising myself, my family, as well as running a small business, I have recently found myself saying no to things that aren’t aligned to my values or what I’m truly passionate about. I’m so excited about what will come from this and I’ve already opened up additional clinic appointments for those that have been patiently waiting.

We often have this perception that we need to “start over” however take a moment and acknowledge the progress you’ve made and how you are committed to being the best version of yourself.

One of the cornerstones of our wellbeing is sleep. Not enough quality sleep can really play havoc on so many of our other body systems, such as our hormones, mental health, blood sugar and energy levels.

This time of year I always find my sleep patterns are all over the show. Going to bed late, being overstimulated by lots of social activities, and then the weather being just far too hot.

Menstruation is often referred to as the fifth vital sign and is an excellent indicator of overall health.

🌱 Regular ovulatory menstrual cycles play a bigger role in our health than we may be aware of. Aside from fertility and pregnancy, regular ovulation is important for maintaining hormonal balance, supporting bone and cardiovascular health as well as mental wellbeing.

🌱 Besides hormonal contraceptives, there are so many other options to help manage your periods, as well as restoring optimal wellbeing.

I seem to be having this conversation a lot recently! So many women I see in clinic report a “low libido” and want to talk about options for management. I thought I would share some of the common themes I have been discussing and why libido isn’t always what you think it may be.

✨ Libido is so multifactorial and isn’t just about s3x. It is about how you feel in your body, your relationship, and in life.

✨ Expectations and assumptions of what are “normal” play a massive part of how we view what we “should” be doing or feeling. Comparing yourself to others, including your partners libido can be detrimental to your overall libido and can squash any desire.

✨ Hormones (especially testosterone) aren’t always to blame.

✨ Cortisol however, does play a big role in response, desire and the need to feel safe.

✨Connection is so important and it starts with the connection with yourself.

✨ Low libido isn’t your fault and you are not to blame – you are an individual that deserves to be celebrated.
