Meet Rocky 🐴💙

NZKS is proud to be new sponsors of Richmond Riding for Disabled a charity supporting children, young people, and adults across the Nelson–Tasman region who are living with disability or facing physical, cognitive, emotional, or social challenges.

Richmond RDA provides therapeutic interaction with horses to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for people experiencing disability, or who have specific challenges or needs.

They help riders develop transferable skills that can make a real difference in their everyday life, contributing to meaningful outcomes for individuals and the local community.

As part of Richmond RDA’s ‘Sponsor a Pony’ initiative, we’re proud to support Rocky, one of the very special ponies helping make a difference in the lives of the people who visit Richmond RDA each week.

As well as a cash contribution, NZKS has teamed up with Omega Plus to provide Rocky with a year’s supply of Omega Plus Salmon Oil Equine Supplement! Salmon Oil is a great source of essential fatty acids to support inflammation, healthy skin, and a shiny, healthy coat, so we can’t wait to see how Rocky responds over the next year.

Take a look at the NZX - New Zealand's Exchange Limited's latest Spotlight series, featuring interviews from CEO Carl Carrington and CFO Katie Bennett.

We spent the morning at our Ruakākā Trial Facility, talking about R&D, innovation, and our future growth plans.

And most importantly, the privilege of having such a premium product to sell to the world.

"King salmon is recognised all over the world as being the premium salmon. It's kind of in the name - it is the King of Salmon. It's got the best taste and texture of all the salmon, and chefs around the world recognise that," Carl Carrington.

We even got to see our new wellboat, the Ronja King, working away in the distance.

Exciting news! NZKS has recently marked a major milestone in our Blue Endeavour project, having commenced operations at the world’s first open ocean King salmon farm.

With both pilot pens onsite, the first fish were successfully relocated to their new home in the open ocean during May and June.

As NZKS CEO Carl Carrington says, "This is the most significant project in our company’s history of more than 35 years. We are now moving into significant growth mode, not just talking about it, but actually doing it. "

The Blue Endeavour project would not be possible without the support of our local partners and contractors, including Johnsons Barge Service Ltd, O'Donnell Park Barging Limited, Nautilus Pacific Ltd and Port Marlborough. Meanwhile strong international partnerships and specialist expertise from Scale AQ and Sølvtrans AS has been fundamental to our journey from day one.

Join us for a behind the scenes tour of this impressive 57 metre wellboat, purpose-built to safely transport live salmon. Its initial focus will be supporting our inshore farms, as well as development at Blue Endeavour, our open-ocean farm located 7km off Cape Lambert, outside the Marlborough Sounds.

Owned and operated by Sølvtrans AS global leaders in wellboat services, the Ronja King combines world-class technology and innovation, with the local expertise of our NZKS team right here in Marlborough.

As we continue to grow, we're investing in the people, technology and partnerships that are helping shape the future of New Zealand King Salmon and the New Zealand aquaculture industry.

Congratulations to this year's New Zealand King Salmon Scholarship recipients! 🎓🐟

Each year, we're proud to support students studying Aquaculture and Business at NMIT helping them take the next step in their education.

Over more than a decade, we've contributed close to $150,000 in scholarship funding, alongside providing hands-on learning opportunities through placements, field trips, research projects, fish health checks, and salmon life cycle studies.

Reinforcing our Norwegian Partnerships – Scale AQ

At NZKS, we believe that establishing partnerships with reputable, highly-skilled and trusted international aquaculture industry leaders will be one of the keys to our successful future growth.

Taking the time together to see first-hand the future innovations with our Norwegian partners is an important part of this commitment.

Scale AQ are pivotal partners in our journey into the open ocean, and Grant Lovell (GM of Aquaculture) and Monique Hatfull (GM Relationships and Communications) had the privilege of being hosted for 3 days by members of the Exec Team - Conor Foster, Martin Søreide and Øyvind Andre Haram.

Some highlights from our time with Scale AQ were:

🌊 Visiting open ocean farms – driving by Salmar’s Ocean Farm 1 and then disembarking to view ScaleAQ’s very recent subsea trail farm (Subsea System) - ~16 and 22NM respectively offshore. We were blessed with the calmest day imaginable, so it was hardly representative of the conditions more common out there (with the farm rated at HS 7.4).

📹 Walking around the 200m circumference farm pens - sending down an ROV and seeing the submersible technology being used was enlightening and gave us a taste of what the future can hold.

♻️ Visiting ScaleAQ's recycling centre, where end-of-life pens are recycled and given a new life in the ocean, embracing circularity and an appreciation of our finite resources.

🎦 Watching the recently released documentary at the exhibition centre, showing the impartial history of the development of the Norwegian Salmon sector – watching the original farmers and their (as we say in NZ) No.8 wire approach to giving it a go really resonated with us Kiwis. This kind of industry transparency and engagement is an interesting approach to building social license.

🫱🏼‍🫲🏼 Connecting with the other partners that Scale AQ are so integrated with, including Mowi and the feed centre based near Frøya.

While there are many things that differentiate Norway and New Zealand (including hemispheres, time zones, and species), there is so much to be gained in collaborations between our nations and industries.

We look forward to returning the hospitality to Scale AQ in October, who will also be attending the upcoming Aquaculture New Zealand conference (14th and 15th October) - nudge if you are yet to purchase your tickets, you won't want to miss this one.

Exciting progress at Blue Endeavour 🌊🐟

The two pilot pens are now in place, and our team is busy with onsite training and fish transfers with our new wellboat, Ronja King.

Check out the latest video update and hear from Grant Lovell, NZKS GM of Aquaculture, as he shares an update on progress so far and what's coming next for Blue Endeavour.

International partnerships and expertise are playing a critical role in delivering the project, and NZKS is working alongside Scale AQ and Sølvtrans AS world leaders in aquaculture infrastructure and wellboat technology respectively.

Our local contractors also played an important role in the installation of the mooring grid and pens - Johnsons Barge Service Ltd, O'Donnell Park Barging Limited.

NZKS also acknowledges the co-funding of this project by the Ministry for Primary Industries Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund (recently changed to the Primary Sector Growth Fund).

We’re incredibly proud to support Special Olympics Basketball Nelson and celebrate the amazing achievements of local athletes Suzy Yadav and Shannon Brandford. 🏀👏

After helping Special Olympics Nelson bring home bronze medals at the 2025 National Games in Christchurch, Suzy and Shannon have now been selected for the official Whaikaha Basketball Trust squad, a huge achievement and a testament to their talent, focus, and dedication.

From Nelson to representing New Zealand on the international stage in Australia, Bangkok, and potentially Cairo, this is an exciting next step and one the whole region can be proud of.

At New Zealand King Salmon, we’ve proudly supported Special Olympics Nelson Basketball for several years, helping provide uniforms, equipment, and opportunities for athletes to compete and connect through sport. Seeing athletes thrive both on and off the court is exactly why partnerships like this matter.

Congratulations again to Suzy and Shannon, and to the coaches, volunteers, families, and wider community who help make opportunities like this possible. 💙

Congratulations to our Tentburn Aquaculture team member, Isha Sharma, on being awarded a Women in Aquaculture Aotearoa leadership scholarship sponsored by Aquaculture New Zealand 👏

As an Early Life Stage Supervisor, Isha plays an important role in caring for our fish from the egg stage through to early growth, combining scientific precision with genuine dedication every day. Alongside guiding teams and supporting operations, Isha brings passion, care, and commitment to everything she does.

The scholarship will see Isha take part in the AWDT “It’s All About YOU” leadership development programme, designed to support women in the early stages of their leadership journey by building confidence, self-awareness, and leadership skills.

With nearly 30 applicants from across the country, this is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of Isha’s hard work and talent. We’re proud to see her recognised and excited to support her continued growth within the aquaculture sector.
