Think you have a Diastasis Recti (DRA)? Here’s what actually matters👇

DRA is a stretch of the connective tissue between your abdominal muscles, and it’s a completely normal change during pregnancy.

✨ The stats show:
• 100% of women have a DRA by 35 weeks pregnant
• Around 60% still have one at 6 weeks postpartum
• Around 32% still have one at 12 months postpartum

Start by checking your tummy:
* Feel along your midline at rest.
* Perform a small head lift (mini crunch).
* Notice the width, but more importantly, the depth and how well your tummy creates tension.

Here are 6 key concepts we teach our mums:

💨 1. Connect your breath with your deep core. Learn to gently draw in the abdominal wall before movement to help manage pressure, rather than pushing out & causing pressure through this stretched tissue.

🤍 2. Depth matters more than width. We note the width of the gap, but we’re even more interested in the depth. As you build tension through the midline, the tissue becomes stronger and more supportive, helping to functionally close this gap.

⚠️ 3. Use coning as feedback, not fear. If you notice coning/doming, don’t panic. It simply tells you to adjust your breathing & modify the load until you can control the movement.

🏋️ 4. Keep progressing. Breathing drills and bird dogs build a great foundation, but your core also needs progressive loading to become stronger and adaptable to the things you do in life.

If you’re unsure where to start, a Pelvic Health Physio can assess your DRA and help you build strength with confidence💞

Postnatal recovery is about so much more than your core.

it’s easy to focus on scars, abdominal separation & your pelvic floor working on your postnatal recovery. But your body doesn’t work in isolated parts. It functions as one whole connected system.

During pregnancy and the early months of motherhood, your body adapts to feeding, carrying your baby, lifting capsules, pushing prams and spending hours looking down. These repetitive positions often create stiffness through your thoracic spine (mid-back), rib cage and surrounding muscles of the ribcage & pelvis.

When these areas lose mobility, your body can’t move as freely. This can affect how efficiently your diaphragm works, reduce the quality of your breathing, and make it much harder for your deep abdominal muscles and pelvic floor to coordinate effectively.

This is why a comprehensive postnatal assessment is so valuable. A Pelvic Health assessment isn’t just assessing your abdominal separation or C-section scar—we’re looking at how your whole trunk functions. We assess your breathing, rib cage movement, thoracic mobility, posture, strength, movement patterns and how all of these pieces work together.

Often, restoring movement through the upper body and rib cage is the missing link that allows your core to reconnect

Postnatal rehabilitation isn’t just about getting your abs back. It’s about restoring the foundations that help you move better🧘‍♀️

Ready to get moving again after having your baby?

✔️ Reduces the risk of returning to exercise too hard, too soon.
✔️ Provides expert guidance from a physiotherapist who understands post-natal recovery.

Whether you’re newly post-partum or looking to restart your exercise journey, we’ll meet you where you’re at and help you progress safely.

Footwork is often the first exercise we perform on the Reformer, but there’s a lot more happening than simply pushing the carriage out. Here’s the differences>

• HEELS

Increases activation of the posterior chain, including the gluteals and hamstrings. Many people also find it easier to connect to their deep hip stabilisers and maintain a neutral pelvis in this position.

• TOES

Working through the forefoot increases the demand on the calf complex (gastrocnemius and soleus), intrinsic foot muscles, and ankle stabilisers. This position more closely mimics the push-off phase of walking, running, jumping, and stair climbing.

• TENDON STRETCH
A fantastic exercise for improving ankle mobility, calf strength, and eccentric control while encouraging movement through the whole foot. It also helps clients learn to distribute load evenly across the forfoot and get big toe mobility

• SONGLE LEG FOOTWORK
One of the best ways to assess and train foot, ankle, knee, and hip control. Working one leg at a time exposes strength asymmetries, challenges pelvic stability, and encourages the knee to track efficiently over the foot.

Whether your goal is to reduce pain, return to running, or simply move with greater mobility, footwork is about much more than your feet.
