Big Wormwood harvest yesterday at a friend’s house. I was up until after midnight sorting a big bag of cuttings and making smudge sticks.

Many people know Wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium) as an anti-parasitic herb, but it is also an ancient magical herb. According to some Herbalists, it is the Patron Herb of Herbalists. Medieval herbals praised wormwood as “the mother of herbs,” a tonic and a guard.

Wormwood is associated with the goddess Artemis. In some myths, the goddess Artemis bestows the herb upon the centaur, Chiron, healer of the gods, who uses it as one of his most important healing herbs.

In the late eighteenth century, Wormwood was first used to brew Absinthe, the legendary green liqueur. Distilled with anise, fennel, hyssop, and other herbs, Absinthe concentrated wormwood’s volatile thujone-rich oil, which creates mild disinhibition and heightened perception.

Wormwood is a strong bitter herb, respected for its power. It is said, the more bitter the herb, the more potent its spirit-cleansing power. Rituals involving wormwood were often guarded and were not meant for common use. Wormwood is considered a powerful herb for protection and banishing negative energies.

From Egypt to Greece to the Celtic north, wormwood was considered a boundary plant. Across multiple European traditions it was used in burial customs, threshold charms, and land-clearing rites. It was used to guard burial sites and cleanse the land to prevent spiritual contamination following war or plague.

When used as incense or hydrosol, Wormwood clears dense atmospheres, dissolving psychic residue much as it purges physical infestation. In Egypt it was used in ritual fumigations to drive out unseen forces of disease.

Wormwood is used to enhance prophecy, psychic abilities, divination and visions. When combined with Mugwort, Wormwood becomes especially potent in rituals related to clairvoyance.

It is associated with the Lovers card in the Tarot and was sometimes used in love infusions or was placed under the bed to draw a loved one. In the Balkans it was used in love-breaking rituals to sever toxic bonds.

As highly protective herb, Wormwood was traditionally carried to guard against bewitchment, accidents and harmful spirits. According to ancient traditions it is the antidote for hemlock and toadstool poisoning and the bite of sea serpents.

Wormwood is considered a purifier, and a herb that confronts corruption of the body and the soul. It can be used to remove anger, according to ‘The Master Book of Herbalism’ this herb is ‘for those who seek to vent their anger by peaceful, creative means.’

In Alchemy Wormwood was associated with the planet Saturn, the planet of endings, truth, and purification. Saturn herbs strip away illusion and excess and Wormwood was said to temper indulgence and bring clarity through confrontation with the unpleasant and the unacknowledged.

Wormwood is a potent enhancer of magical rituals amplifying the power of your intentions.

A native seed that helps us to see, to dream and imagine infinite possibilities.

Inkberry, also known as Turutu or New Zealand Blueberry is a native plant celebrated for its iridescent, glossy, violet-blue to deep-purple berries. The berries are bitter and in large amounts poisonous to humans. However, they are a vital food source for native birds, including Silver Eyes.

Inkberry is found throughout New Zealand from sea level to 1,100m. It is found thriving in the geothermal fields in the Taupō Volcanic Zone. It is a hardy plant resembling a small fine leafed flax. It bears flowers from late spring to summer, followed by its magnificent berries.

The etymology of the scientific name, Dianella, refers to the Roman goddess Diana and nigra, means 'dark' or 'black'. The name Inkberry comes from the inky juice produced by the berries. The Māori name, Turutu, means 'to drip', which refers to the berries falling freely. Māori traditionally used the leaves to call birds.

Inkberry is the Vision Essence. It is one of 12 native seed essences that work at the level of DNA to address ancestral, hereditary and past life patterns. Inkberry helps us release fears and blocks in consciousness related to our visionary intuitive capacities, dreams, ideals and reality.

Inkberry often steps forward for those who have fears around their psychic abilities. This is common for many of us who have ancestors that were impacted by the witch trails and the inquisition. It is not only helpful for intergenerational trauma but also for those who have past life trauma from this era.

Inkberry supports vision, insight and creative visualisation. It help us to have a healthy balance between our inner and outer realities, the ideal and what is practically possible. It enables us perceive the higher self's vision for the soul, imagine new realities and a future with limitless possibilities.

A native flower for post-natal depression and confident mothering.

Native Harebell is one of New Zealand's most widespread native herbs, it grows in diverse habitats, having a particular affinity for disturbed sites, often colonising rural roadsides, burnt areas, or eroded banks. It grows between 10 and 50 centimetres tall, occasionally reaching up to 80 centimetres.

Native Harebell has tiny soft bell-shaped flowers at the end of its stems. Their colour ranges from white to pale blue, and sometimes even a vibrant blue-violet or soft pink. It blooms profusely from spring to autumn. It's delicate flowers open and close in response to light availability.

Native Harebell is the Tenacity Essence. It is associated with the astrological sign of Cancer and it is a constitutional essence for those born between 14th - 23rd July. It’s also a plant ally for those who have planets in the sign of Cancer between 20°-29°59’.

I often see Native Harebell step forward for people when they are emotionally stuck in the past. It helps address sad memories, homesickness or the loss of a loved one, particularly a child or a parent. It promotes emotional resilience and helps us to be emotional present rather than clinging to the past or being despondent about the future.

I often give Native Harbell to mothers as it is the essence that addresses postnatal depression. It helps with despondency and fear related to home, family, parenting and mothering. It supports us to be confident in our mothering abilities and brings back joy to mothering when we are experiencing depression and emotional inertia.
