I realised after my last post that there’s a part of the Brothers Ink story I probably didn’t say loudly enough.

I didn’t just turn up here knowing how to tattoo.
Gene and Kim taught me.
They gave me the opportunity, the time, the knowledge and probably a fair bit more patience than I deserved.

Gene and I have butted heads over the years. Of course we have. Spend enough years working beside someone and eventually you’re going to want to throw something at each other.
But I love the prick like a brother.

Brothers Ink has been a huge part of my life, but it was Gene and Kim who opened that door for me in the first place. Whatever I do with the shop from here, that doesn’t disappear because the name on the paperwork changed.
I owe them both a great deal.

This next chapter might be mine to steer, but I didn’t build the fu***ng boat.

If you’re new here hello. I’m Gary.
I’m a tattoo artist, illustrator, painter, writer, maker of weird s**t and occasional builder of unnecessarily enormous things.

I’ve been tattooing for 11years at Brothers Ink, one of New Plymouth’s longest-standing tattoo studios of which recently I took over ownership.
It’s a pretty exciting new chapter for me.

Brothers Ink has been a massive part of my life for a long time, and now I get the chance to put my own stamp on the place and see where we can take it.
There are some big things on the horizon, and I’m genuinely looking forward to what comes next.

My work bounces around a bit, Japanese, traditional, black and grey, illustrative stuff and stupid ideas that somehow become good tattoos
Whatever else keeps things interesting.
Outside tattooing I draw, paint, write, build things and generally have a hard time leaving stuff well enough alone.

Tattooing is still the bread and butter though.
I charge $150 an hour.
No taking myself too seriously.
Just solid tattoos,
fair prices and good conversation.
11 years of knowing which end of the machine goes in the person.

I’m Gary Wood owner and tattooer at Brothers Ink, New Plymouth.
If you’ve been lurking for a while, say hello.
If you’ve got a tattoo idea,
send it through.
And if you’re only here to see what ridiculous fu***ng thing I build next…
Fair enough.
