Why Strength Matters Before Plyometrics
Plyometric training has become one of the most popular methods for improving speed, explosiveness, vertical jump, and athletic performance. From basketball and volleyball players to sprinters and football athletes, everyone wants to jump higher and move faster.
But there’s one mistake many athletes make:
They start plyometrics before building enough strength.
Plyometrics are not just “jump training.” They place high levels of force on the muscles, tendons, and joints. If the body is not strong enough to absorb and produce those forces safely, the risk of injury increases — and performance gains become limited.
Strength Creates the Foundation
Before an athlete can become explosive, they must first become strong.
Strength training develops:
Joint stability
Tendon stiffness
Muscle coordination
Force production
Body control
Think of strength as the engine and plyometrics as the turbocharger. If the engine is weak, adding more explosiveness won’t maximize performance.
