Technology with Matua Stone has been buzzing — our tamariki have been turning cherry blossom & rimu 🌸🪵 into something they can hold, use and be proud of: spoons, crafted with their own two hands! 🙌

And wow, did it take focus:
~ Cutting the timber to size — getting hands-on with wood chipping and learning to respect the grain.
~Sketching the shape on paper, then carefully cutting out that 2D outline before the real mahi began.
~ Carving, shaping & sanding it into a fully 3D, ready-to-use spoon!
Our learners leveled up with learning how to sharpening hand tools like pros, and mastering machine tools safely and with real confidence.
Craftsmanship, patience, problem-solving, and a whole lot of fun — Technology class Pure magic ✨

During Term 3, we welcomed three new families and new staff members from Mexico, the USA, and New Zealand. We look forward to welcoming even more families in Term 4.

The mihi whakatau (welcome ceremony) is a deeply special moment for our new families, their wider whānau, and friends who are also invited.

Green School learners and established families hear from the new families and some of their story, then they physically cross the room, and bring them over – inviting them to join them on the other side of the room - a powerful symbol of connection and belonging.

Then, the tapu (sacred) part of the ceremony is broken as everyone shares a piece of fruit together, meeting and connecting.💚

We are so excited to usher in our 2026 Graduates as they prepare for their final TED Talk Greenstone Presentations!
As we look ahead to this exciting milestone, we’re taking inspiration from past graduate Jacob Henderson, who graduated from Green School New Zealand Taranaki in 2023 and is now pursuing a Diploma in Environmental Management while following his passion for diving.
Jacob credits Green School’s hands-on, outdoor learning approach for helping shape his pathway and deepening his connection to the environment.

Studying marine and environmental management, Jacob spends much of his time in the field, surveying, monitoring, and exploring the underwater world.
Reflecting on his Green School experience, Jacob says, “Green School really set me up and got me ready for life out of high school.”
He also speaks fondly of the incredible support he received from teachers, who encouraged him to pursue his interests and helped him grow the confidence to follow a career he genuinely enjoys.

From Green School graduate to environmental management student and aspiring technical diver, Jacob’s journey is a fantastic example of where curiosity, passion, and purpose can lead.
We can’t wait to see where the dreams and ideas of our 2026 graduates take them next.

Are you as excited for Lily as she is for Greenstone? 🌿
Lily has chosen a topic close to her heart: ‘motor racing and her motorsport experience’.

“Through Green School New Zealand and the independent study pathway the high school leadership team created for me, I learned to understand the mechanical, technical, and physics associated with performance in motorsport. This allowed me to refine my skill set to drive at a higher level of performance, which has helped lead me to the opportunities I’ve been presented with currently.”

Her passion and commitment are exactly what we want to see carry our learners through the year. She’s a shining example of the Greenstone experience! ✨

What is Greenstone? It’s a year-long programme for our Year 13 learners, finishing with a TEDx-style talk where each student shares their passion and purpose with the community. From meaningful causes to creative pursuits, every presentation reflects courage, compassion, and a drive to create positive change in the world. 🌍

Each rangatahi (learner) is paired with a mentor and takes part in regular check-ins, pitch panels with experts, entrepreneurs, and business leaders - this year, one even flew in from Auckland for a panel presentation!

🌿’ Rumaki Taiao Nature Day’ is the best day of the week for many of our learners - especially when it lands in the ‘Troppo’!

What is the ‘Troppo’? It’s our 324m² greenhouse, lovingly reassembled by our incredible community and transformed into a vibrant learning hub, overseen by Whaea Siobhán ✿ Ecological Growing Siobhan.

All our learners get hands-on in Troppo through rich, place-based learning. From time in the māra kai (vegetable garden) to hours spent inside our tropical greenhouse, our Primary tauira plant seeds, nurture plants, w**d, and harvest - then cook their own kai over an open fire in Fen Whare, enjoying lunch by our awa.

Troppo is also where our community comes together. Through Shared Kai Fridays, our ‘Wild Things’ events (whānau welcome!), and special occasions like our recent interschool Science Quiz, learners share produce via our pātaka and take part in Nourish 2 Flourish, our community cooking kaupapa.

Troppo is more than a greenhouse - it’s a space for play, creativity, and connection, and a true reflection of the Green School way of life. 🌱

Please join us in welcoming Matua Stone, our new Design & Science Educator!

Some of these images capture the energy of his very first Design Technology class - where big ideas were dreamed up, safety awareness sharpened, source materials explored, and (of course) a fresh cup of Manuka honey tea was shared. ☕🌱
Matua Stone brings real strength and passion to our Social Science course, opening up innovative, place-based learning grounded in mātauranga Māori, local history and the cultural heritage of Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Curious what it might look like for your own tamariki? Register for our upcoming ‘Virtual Open Day’ https://www.greenschool.nz/events/gsnz-open-day-2026-yttxh-s2hm5-bckp5. 🏡
