Looking After Ourselves This Winter 🤧
Winter has a way of whispering slow down and there's real wisdom in that. But there's a difference between honouring the season and disappearing into the couch until September.
Here's what I'm holding onto these cooler months. Vitamin C every single day.
Non-negotiable.
Your immune system is working hard right now; give it the support it deserves.
Keep moving even when you really don't want to. This one's the big one. It is SO easy to retreat inside when it's cold and grey and the bed is warm. But here's the thing, once you're out there, you never regret it. Dress warm, dig deep, and go for it. Your body and your mind will thank you every time.
Honour the slower rhythm without stopping altogether. Winter is about resting reflection and nourishment. But movement, fresh air, and connection still matter. Maybe it just looks a little gentler than summer.
Tend your nervous system. Whether that's your morning ritual, booking a Reiki session, time in nature, or simply sitting quietly in meditation, make space for it. You can't pour from an empty cup, and winter has a sneaky way of doing that if we don't care for ourselves over winter.

What's one thing you're doing to look after yourself this winter?

Can we normalise not following the latest trends and just being happy with what we love?
I've been thinking about this a lot lately. There's so much pressure in our daily lives just to keep up.
But what if we just... didn't?
What if it's okay to still wear those old jeans because they fit just right? To keep the sofa that's a bit worn in but still holds you perfectly after a long day. To leave the walls that "out of date" colour because you still love walking into that room. To keep the mismatched plates in the cupboard because every one of them has a memory attached.
What if we kept loving the things that already feel good simply because it works?
Trends come and go. But what feels true to you stays.
So here's your permission slip: Skip the trend. Stick with what you love.
What's something in your life that's "out of date" but you're not letting go of any time soon?

There's a particular kind of quiet that only winter mornings have.
The dark that lingers a little longer, the cold that makes warmth feel like a gift, the slowness that this time of year forces upon us.
I used to hate this time of year.
Now I lean into it.
Winter is asking us to go inward, rest without guilt, tend to ourselves the way we tend to everyone else with patience, warmth and care.
I think of Reiki as winter medicine.
Not because it fixes anything, but because it creates the conditions for the body to do what it already knows how to do.
Rest. Release. Restore.
Are you leaning into winter or resisting it?

Can we normalise grieving the version of ourselves that we used to be?
I mean, she was pretty awesome in some ways. She had more certainty about things. She probably slept better. She didn't know what she didn't know, which was kind of freeing, honestly. She wore different clothes, believed different things, made different choices.
And all of a sudden she's not here anymore. She became someone else.
Which is good, I think. Mostly. But it's also sometimes a bit sad, and that's okay.
Nobody really tells you that growing up means losing versions of yourself.
But here's the thing, you can miss who you were and still be happy with who you're becoming. Those two things can exist at the same time.
So if you're sad about losing an old version of you, that's ok.
But remember this version of you is pretty incredible. You know things now. You've lived things. You made it through.
And there's something kind of beautiful about that.

Can we talk about perimenopause for a minute?
As a Registered Nurse, I've spent years supporting people through health challenges and life transitions.
As a Reiki practitioner, I've also seen how deeply our emotional, physical and energetic wellbeing are connected.
And as a woman navigating this stage of life myself, let me tell you... perimenopause can be a wild ride.
For many women, it arrives quietly.
The interrupted sleep.
The brain fog.
The anxiety that seems to appear from nowhere.
The mood changes.
The exhaustion that no amount of coffee seems to fix.
Yet so many women are told it's just stress they're doing too much.
What I've learned, both professionally and personally, is that perimenopause isn't something to "just get over."
It's a profound transition.
A season that asks us to slow down and listen to our bodies in a different way.
Through nursing, I've seen the importance of understanding what's happening physiologically ie hormones
Through Reiki, I've witnessed the power of creating space for rest, balance and healing.
And through my own journey, I've learned that this season isn't about losing who you are.
It's about rediscovering yourself.
With more wisdom.
More self-awareness.
And often, a much deeper appreciation for your own needs.
If you're swimming up perimenopause creek right now, I feel ya. Some days are hella rough.
Just know your symptoms are real and your experience is valid and you deserve support, understanding and compassion as you navigate this chapter.
Be gentle with yourself. ❤️
This isn't the end of something.
It may just be the beginning of a (less filtered 🤭) but more empowered version of you.

"If you're navigating perimenopause, what's one thing you wish more people understood about it? "

5am and the house is still… and honestly, this is my favourite time of day.
Before the world starts asking things of me.
Before the phone lights up.
Before the to-do list kicks in.
It’s just me, a warm coffee in my hands, and the quiet.
I’ve really learned that how I start my morning shapes everything that follows… so I protect this time fiercely.
Some mornings it’s meditation.
Some mornings it’s Reiki on myself.
And some mornings it’s just sitting in the dark, breathing, and feeling grateful for a moment that’s mine.
Because let me tell you… as women, we’re so used to giving from the second we open our eyes.
What if the first hour of your day belonged to you instead?
Are you someone who has a morning routine… or are your mornings a bit chaotic right now?

Tiny habits to gift yourself this May
Lately I've been thinking a lot about the seasons and how the calendar months sit within them, each one carrying its own particular light and energy.
Today, as I look out the window, I see stillness, calm, and sunshine. May is a beautiful month, and today she is shining in all her glory.
Here in New Zealand, May sits at the forefront of winter, holding guard, preparing us gently for the cold ahead. There's something quietly sacred about that role. Its winter, but not yet the deep of winter. A month of transition.
And transition, I've learned, is one of the best times to gift yourself something small and intentional.
Inviting new habits into our lives doesn't have to mean overhauling everything. It just means softening into what nourishes you, especially when the days grow shorter and the pull toward the couch gets stronger. Little anchors of joy. Tiny acts of self-kindness.
Here are a few I've been sitting with lately, and ones I'd gently offer to you:
Step outside in the morning light, even for five minutes. Winter sun is still sun. Let it land on your face and body.
Make something warm and slow. A pot of soup. A cup of tea you actually sit down with. May invites us to slow our pace, let the kitchen become a small ritual of care.
Put your hands on your heart before you get out of bed. Just for a breath or two. Notice what's there. You don't have to fix what thoughts or feelings are going on as you wake, just acknowledge it. This is the foundation of every energy practice I know.
Light a candle at the end of the day. Signal to your body that the doing is done and rest can begin. Something about candles in the evening is genuinely healing.
Rest without guilt. This one's for my fellow over-givers. May is literally asking us to slow down, the trees are doing it, wildlife is doing it. You're allowed to do it too.
Winter doesn't have to be something we brace against. With the right tiny rituals, it can become a season we actually sink into, warm, nourished, and held.
What small habit are you gifting yourself this May? I'd love to know. 🍂

A winter self-care ritual worth trying this weekend.
When the temperature drops and the days shorten, our bodies naturally crave warmth, stillness and nourishment.
Here's a simple ritual I love this time of year:
🛀A warm bath or shower | consciously releasing the week from your body
🕯️Lighting a candle | signal to your nervous system that it's safe to slow down
☕ Something warm to drink | held in both hands, no scrolling
🌿 5 minutes of stillness | just breathing, just being
No agenda, no productivity, just you, tending to yourself.
This is the energy that Reiki amplifies, that deep permission to rest.
If you'd love support going even deeper this winter, I have sessions available in-person and via distance healing.

There's something my pets do; they love without an agenda. They see me without the mask. They sit with me in the dark and don't ask me to explain myself.
They love me on my worst days. The ugly-cry days. The days I don't have anything to give. The days I forget to love myself.

No judgment. No conditions. Just presence.

Anyone who's ever been greeted at the door like they hung the moon knows what it really is.

It's Love. Pure. Uncomplicated. The kind of love we're all trying to find and some of us are lucky enough to come home to everyday.

Our animals teach us something quietly profound: that love doesn't have to be earned. It can just be given.

Maybe we could all take a lesson from them. 🐾

Tell me about your pet and what do they do that melts you every time? 👇

New moon energy, what are you calling in this month? 🌑
There's something about a new moon that invites us:
To pause.
To check in.
To ask, "what do I want to call in"? and "what do I want to let go of"?
This month I'm calling in more ease. More clients who are ready to feel better. More mornings by the fire with a hot coffee.
I'm Karina, Usui Reiki master/teacher, nurse, mum of four, eternal believer that healing is always possible.
If you've been feeling called to try Reiki or Access Bars, a new moon is a beautiful time to begin.
What are you calling in? Tell me in the comments 👇
