Once again a slight wander off track (sorry Grandad) rewarded me with two more old girls to add to my collection of favourite trees.
Not picking favourites but 80% of this collection = Pūriri/Vitex lucens.
How old would these ones be, I wonder?

Fermented foods...but maybe not with high histamine

Vitamin D3...but maybe not if you have sarcoidosis

Iodine...but maybe not if you have Hashimoto's

Probiotics...but maybe not certain strains if you have IBD

B12...but maybe don't waste your time with 50mcg standard dosing

Health and wellness information is everywhere, accessible 24 hours a day, from multiple sources of wildly varied credibility and accuracy.
Which is why so many clients arrive in clinic feeling overwhelmed and confused.

As a naturopath, the magic stuff is not just the information, it's the ability to apply that information to each client, so as individuals they can understand, achieve and maintain their long-term health objectives.

Last Friday

Hopes were high for more sightings of were-were kōkako up on the highest level of the Waiorongomai loop.
Alas there were none.

A visit from a sweet little toutouwai was a nice consolation though.

Werewere-kōkako (Entoloma hochstetteri)

Spotting these will never get old.
Their colour is so gloriously out of place.

This is my third year of heading up to where I first accidentally stumbled upon them.
A most serendipitous occasion indeed.

Find them in the cool of autumn, maybe after some rain, amongst fallen leaves and moss.
They like to grow underneath podocarps, so get familiar with the likes of
rimu, kauri, kahikatea, mataī, miro, tōtara or beech.

A couple of Thursdays ago
Waiorongomai

That time again, the annual crawl back up to Buck Rock on my werewere-kōkako (Entoloma hochstetteri) pilgrimage.

Highlights

Werewere-kōkako (Entoloma hochstetteri)
Snacks up on top of the big rock
A trio of tūī flying in formation above me and my twix up on that rock
No falls, no stumbles, no injuries

Lowlights

A cheeky little mustelid sighting

A person with a ferritin level of 100ug/L is going to feel different than a person with a ferritin level of 60ug/L.

A person with a ferritin level of 60ug/L is going to feel different than a person with a ferritin level of 30ug/L.

Yet all are within the reference range and all have been told that their levels are normal.

Normal is not optimal, within range is not necessarily optimal.

Did you know that reference ranges are developed based on the results of a sample population?
From that sample population of 100 people, the 95% in the middle is deemed normal, while the 2.5% at either end, is not.

Did you also know that the range is there to flag disease.
But as we know, there is more to the matter than disease or no disease.

I recommend getting your results looked over by someone who uses functional ranges when looking at your results, especially if you continue to be told everything is normal when you feel anything but.
