🌴 What I Saw vs What I Sketched 🎨

Confession...

When I'm sketching on holiday, I'm not trying to draw everything exactly as I see it.

I'm trying to capture:
☑️ The feeling of the place
☑️ The colours that caught my eye
☑️ The atmosphere
☑️ The memory I want to keep

A sketchbook isn't a camera.

It doesn't need every detail, every leaf, every shadow, or every building. Sometimes a few lines, a splash of colour, and a little artistic licence tell the story far better.

My favourite Bali sketching tip:
Start with the thing that made you stop and look.

Was it the temple?
The doorway?
The palm tree?
The scooter?
The splash of bougainvillea?

Sketch that first and let the rest be suggested rather than explained.

That's often where the magic happens. ✨

Staying with beautiful friends this weekend and couldn’t resist an early start to capture the sunrise in my journal.

🌿✨This week has been a beautiful mixed bag.

Gorgeous sunshine.
Fields of sunflowers.
Deep conversations and soul-nourishing friendship.

And in between all of that… quiet wondering. Planning. Stretching into ideas that feel both exciting and unknown.

This morning I knew exactly what I needed — colour and play.

So I pulled out my Posca markers, Inktense pencils, gouache and Neocolor II. Kept the palette limited. Let the mountains emerge. No pressure. No outcome. Just mark-making, layering, curiosity.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is return to play.

Today felt like a gentle remembering of my words for this year:
Playful.
Expansive.

And I can feel both unfolding.

If summer had a love language… this would be it 🌻☀️

Lisa and I spent the most beautiful scorching summer day at Aston Norwood Gardens, wandering through the mini maze surrounded by the tallest, most gorgeous sunflowers.

We packed a picnic (complete with our prettiest tablecloth and teacups, of course) and even brought our paint supplies… which we didn’t end up using because we were too busy soaking up the moment.

Golden fields, warm air, laughter, and the kind of simple joy that fills your cup right up.

Been a hot minute since a woman’s face wandered onto my page 💫
So… a cheeky 5-minute play with Derwent Inktense pencils happened.

No plan. No overthinking. Just letting the pencils dance and seeing who popped up to say hello.
A little wonky, a little whimsical, very relaxed — exactly how I like it.

Sometimes art just wants to be a moment, not a masterpiece ✨
