Blue September | Prostate Cancer Awareness

This September, Hora Te Pai is proud to support Blue September, helping raise awareness of prostate cancer and encouraging our tāne to take charge of their hauora.

Prostate cancer can affect men at any age, and knowing your body and noticing changes is important. Changes to urination, difficulty starting or stopping, needing to go more often, or blood in your urine or semen are some signs that shouldn’t be ignored.
If something doesn’t feel right, don’t put it off. Have the kōrero with your GP or one of our kaimahi and ask about what screening or checks may be right for you.

Let’s use Blue September as a reminder to check in on the tāne in our lives, encourage open kōrero and support one another to stay well.

At Hora Te Pai, our kaupapa is grounded in manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and kotahitanga. We’re here to support our tāne and whānau every step of the way

🌼 Daffodil Day at Hora Te Pai 💛

Today, Hora Te Pai is turning yellow to celebrate Daffodil Day! 🌼

Our kaimahi have come together to show their support for the many whānau whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Daffodil Day calls us to pause, and remember those we have lost to Cancer but turn towards those in our community who are living with Cancer and lend our support 💛

Daffodil Day is a gentle reminder for our whānau about the importance of knowing your body and noticing changes.

Taking a little time to check in with yourself and being aware of what is normal for you can help you recognise when something has changed. This could be a new lump, unexplained pain, changes in your bowel habits, unusual bleeding, changes to your skin, or anything that doesn’t feel right or doesn’t go away.

These changes don’t always mean cancer, but it’s always good to ask questions. If you notice something that worries you, have a kōrero with your GP or one of our Cancer Care support team.

Regular cancer screening is an important part of looking after your hauora too and it’s free for some age groups. Screening helps find some cancers early when treatment may be more effective. If you’re unsure about your screening or would like to talk through a change you’ve noticed, call us on 0800 122 504 and ask to speak to Dee or Kiri from our Cancer Care Support team.

Daffodil Day

On Friday 28 August, Hora Te Pai will celebrate Daffodil Day to raise awareness and support for whānau affected by cancer. You’ll also see our members of the community out collecting koha to raise funds and awareness for such an important kaupapa.

Cancer can touch many of our whānau, and Daffodil Day is an opportunity reflect and acknowledge whānau living with cancer, remember those we have lost, and serves as a reminder that no one has to walk this journey alone.

We invite all our whānau to join us and wear something yellow on Friday 28 August as a symbol of support, hope and kotahitanga. 🌼

I roto i ngā manaakitanga, me te aroha nui, support our whānau and raise awareness around cancer and the importance of looking after our hauora.

💛 Wear yellow. Start the kōrero. Show your support. 💛

Mānawa maie a te pūtanga a Matariki,

Mānawa maie a te ariki o te rangi,

Mānawa maie a te matahi o te tau

Mānawatia a Matariki, Mānawatia a Pūanga

On Wednesday, the Hora Te Pai whānau gathered together for our very first Hautapu.

As dawn broke, we held space to honour Matariki and remember those who have passed — whānau who once walked through our doors, shared their stories with us, and remain forever part of our Hora Te Pai whānau. Though no longer with us, they now watch over us among the stars. Kua whetūrangitia rātou.

Being together gave us the opportunity to pause and acknowledge the gift of the present. As we offered our karakia to Matariki, gave thanks for the year gone by, and shared our hopes and intentions for the year ahead.

Celebrating Hautapu together has given us a deeper sense of kotahitanga, a renewed sense of purpose, and excitement for what this new year will bring for our team, the whānau we serve, and our wider community.

To all of our whānau, we hope Matariki brings you time to remember, time to reflect, and the courage to dream boldly for the year ahead.

💨 Ururangi – The Breath of Life

Ururangi is the whetū of the winds, reminding us of the power of movement, change, and the life-giving breath that connects us all. Just as the wind carries seeds across the whenua and shapes the world around us, it reminds us that even the smallest actions can create positive change in our own lives. Taking time to pause, breathe deeply, and reconnect with te taiao can nurture our taha hinengaro, strengthen our taha wairua, and bring a sense of balance to our oranga.

Ururangi also encourages us to keep moving in ways that feel right for us. Whether it's a walk with whānau, playing with tamariki, stretching at home, or simply stepping outside to feel the fresh air on your face, every movement supports your taha tinana. This Matariki, let Ururangi inspire you to embrace the changing seasons, breathe deeply, and remember that every small step towards caring for yourself is a step towards a stronger oranga.

🌧️ Waipunarangi – The Gift of Rain

Waipunarangi is the whetū that watches over the rain and reminds us of the life it brings. Rain nourishes Papatūānuku, replenishes our awa and roto, and provides the water needed for the whenua, ngahere, and all living things to flourish. Although rainy days are often seen as gloomy, they are essential for growth, reminding us that every season has its purpose.

Just as the rain nurtures te taiao, it's important that we nurture our own oranga during the colder months. Winter is a time to care for our taha tinana by staying warm, enjoying nourishing kai, keeping up with vaccinations, and allowing ourselves time to rest. It's also a reminder to look after our taha hinengaro and taha wairua, checking in with ourselves and our loved ones, and reaching out for support when we need it. This Matariki, let Waipunarangi remind you that growth often begins with care, and that even through life's rainy seasons, brighter days are ahead.
