Home Health Tip: Coughs 🤒

Has cold & flu season hit your household? Do you have a family member with an annoying viral cough that just won’t go away?

Community pharmacist Tracey shares a simple home health tip to help soothe coughs and support recovery.

🍯 Honey is a pantry staple that can help reduce inflammation in the throat and ease coughing, especially when taken before bed. It’s been shown to be as effective for short‑term cough relief for adults and tamariki over 1 year.

✨ If you have Manuka honey, especially UMF 15+, even better. Manuka honey has unique antibacterial properties which may offer added support when helping fight infection.

If you or a family member have a lingering cough, or one that’s getting worse, talk to your healthcare provider.

Food allergies and food intolerances are often confused, but they’re not the same. In this article, Renee explains the key differences.

If you’ve ever felt “off” after eating, think bloating, headaches, or fatigue, it might not be an allergy at all. Intolerances are usually linked to how your body processes food, can be dose-dependent, and often show up later.

Allergies, on the other hand, involve the immune system and tend to cause faster, more immediate reactions, even from small amounts of a food.

Knowing the difference can help you avoid unnecessary food restrictions and better understand what your body is telling you.

Hantavirus: What you need to know

You may have seen recent news about hantavirus. Here are the key facts:

👉 Hantavirus is usually spread through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, not through everyday contact with people.

👉 The strain reported overseas can very rarely spread between people, but this requires close, prolonged contact.

👉 There have never been any cases of hantavirus detected in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the overall risk here remains low.

👉 WHO has assessed the global risk as low, and is managing an internationally coordinated response.

If you’ve travelled overseas recently and feel unwell, contact your healthcare provider for advice.
