Celebrating Our Medical Centre Assistants

Behind every busy general practice is a team of people helping things run smoothly, safely, and with care.

At Raglan Medical, we’re proud to acknowledge Teresa, Manaia and Tippy, our Medical Centre Assistants (MCAs), who play a vital role in supporting patients, whānau, nurses, doctors, and the wider clinic team every day.

Their role is varied and hands-on — from preparing treatment rooms, checking equipment and supplies, and supporting clinical procedures, through to helping with observations, recalls, screening programmes, and patient information.

MCAs are also an important link between the clinical team and our community. Their work requires strong organisation, attention to detail, compassion, cultural awareness, and the ability to respond calmly when the day changes quickly.

Much of what they do happens behind the scenes, but it makes a real difference to the patient experience.

We are incredibly grateful for the skill, flexibility, and care our MCA team brings to Raglan Medical. Their contribution strengthens the whole practice and helps us continue providing responsive, community-focused healthcare for our local whānau.

Annual Winter Catch-Up

We had a fantastic evening at our annual Winter Catch-Up at The Shack - Raglan last weekend, enjoying three delicious courses and great company.

A huge thank you to Justin, Alex, and the team for their amazing hospitality and for opening outside their regular hours.

We really appreciated the opportunity to unwind, socialise, and have some fun together.

Practice Nurse Vacancy
An exciting opportunity has become available for a New Zealand Registered Nurse to join the Raglan Medical team.

We’re looking for a nurse who is confident working both autonomously and collaboratively, with strong communication skills, sound computer skills, and competence in clinical assessment.

This role offers variety, professional connection, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the health and wellbeing of our Whāingaroa community.

Position: 0.6 FTE, with the possibility of increasing to 0.8 FTE depending on skills and experience.

Applicants must have:
- A minimum of two years’ nursing experience in New Zealand
- A valid working visa
- Current New Zealand nursing registration

General practice experience is preferred, including cervical screening, vaccinations and chronic disease management. However, support will be provided to gain appropriate qualifications for the role.

We understand that longer waiting times to see your preferred GP or Nurse Practitioner (NP) can be frustrating, and we acknowledge this isn’t ideal. We’ve experienced increased demand across the practice and we want to reassure our community that we are actively working to improve access.

We’re pleased to share that additional medical support is coming soon, including new doctors joining the team. This will increase appointment capacity and improve availability over the coming months.

If you or someone else is experiencing a medical emergency — such as severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, or a serious accident — please call 111 immediately.

Over the years, members of the Raglan Medical team have helped provide emergency medical response at Whāingaroa Hoe (Regatta), supporting the kaupapa and helping ensure participants can enjoy the day safely.

Waka ama is about more than sport — it brings together movement, culture, and connection to each other and to Te Moana. Staying active in ways that strengthen both body and community reflects the values we hold as a practice, and we feel fortunate to have strong ties within this thriving kaupapa.

Kia ora Whāingaroa,

We’re delighted to share that Dr Ilias will be returning to Raglan Medical as a GP from September 2026 through to March 2027.

Ilias previously worked at the clinic between 2016 and 2019, and we’re thrilled to welcome him back. He and his wife, Femke, will be returning from the Netherlands with their two children, Mette and Teike, for a seven‑month stay in Aotearoa.

This visit will be especially meaningful for their whānau, as their daughter was born here in New Zealand. Raglan holds a special place in their hearts, and they’re looking forward to their children reconnecting with this beautiful part of the world.

Ilias is excited to reconnect with the practice, meet new patients, and catch up with familiar faces over the coming months.

Recently, Mike, Adrian, Amy and Michelle attended the 21st WONCA World Rural Health Conference in Wellington — a global gathering of rural and family medicine leaders.

It was a valuable opportunity to reconnect with colleagues including Fiona Bolden and Rebekah Doran, and to learn alongside practitioners from across Aotearoa and around the world.

We were especially proud to see kaumātua Russell Riki involved in the conference pōwhiri and presenting an award at the Gala Dinner — a meaningful reflection of the strength and leadership of our local community on the international stage.

“Whānau Ora: Integrating mātauranga Māori and rural health for a thriving future.”

The kaupapa strongly reflects the future direction of rural healthcare here in Whāingaroa and across Aotearoa.

• Equity in rural health
• Indigenous models of care
• Māori health frameworks and community‑led approaches
• Global collaboration through the GRACE initiative
• Workforce sustainability and improving access to care

The programme featured keynote speakers from New Zealand and overseas (including Sir Ashley Bloomfield), alongside panel discussions on health policy, Indigenous care, and innovation and technology in rural settings.

There were oral presentations, workshops, posters, case studies and powerful shared experiences from rural communities worldwide.

The conference was highly engaging and collaborative, with a strong sense of shared purpose. There was a clear focus not just on talking about change — but on reshaping systems to better serve rural communities.

We’re proud to be part of these important conversations and to bring new ideas and insights back home to Whāingaroa.

We’re proud to have team members contributing beyond the clinic — with Mike Loten serving on the committee and helping to maintain, improve, and develop new tracks for the community to enjoy.
