Its name, Wai Ariki or “chiefly waters”, is a reminder of the origin of Rotorua’s healing thermal waters, which have drawn visitors to the city for more than 130 years. Wai Ariki’s unique features combine with therapeutic mineral waters to deliver a world class bathing, spa and wellness facility that provides a place to relax, sustain and heal. These pou whenua (carved wooden posts) represent the spiritual connection between our iwi and tīpuna (ancestors), with each one telling a story.

Today, we remember the 140th anniversary of the Tarawera eruption, which took place on 10 June 1886.

The Tarawera eruption destroyed the Pink and White Terraces, a place where local iwi (tribe) and visitors from around the world gathered to bathe in geothermal waters, treasured for their beauty and healing properties. Their loss was deeply felt.

Yet, from that loss came renewal. The geothermal waters we use here at Wai Ariki are part of the same story, shaped by the land, rich in minerals and healing properties. At Wai Ariki, we honour the journey from destruction to restoration, and the strength of those who came before us.
