In the Yoga Sutras, Svadhyaya is often translated as “self-study”—but it is far more than this.

Svadhyaya invites us into a lifelong relationship with self-inquiry. It is the practice of observing our thoughts, patterns, reactions, beliefs, and behaviours with curiosity rather than judgment. Through this witnessing awareness, we begin to understand not only who we have become, but who we truly are beneath conditioning and habit.

Yoga is not just what happens on the mat. Every conversation, challenge, relationship, and emotional trigger becomes an opportunity for yogic practice.

When we engage in Svadhyaya, we move from unconscious reaction to conscious choice. We become students of our own inner landscape.

The question shifts from “Why is this happening to me?” to “What is this here to teach me?”

❤️Notice emotional triggers and ask, “What belief or wound is being activated?”

❤️Journal regularly about recurring thoughts, patterns, and experiences.

❤️Observe self-talk and identify where criticism, fear, or limitation arise.

❤️Study sacred texts, poetry, or wisdom teachings and reflect on how they apply to your life.

❤️Notice the moments that bring genuine joy, ease, or aliveness, and reflect on what they reveal about your authentic nature.

❤️Keep a journal of moments of gratitude, delight, or meaningful connection to better understand what truly nourishes your spirit.
