You shouldn’t have to choose between looking after yourself and being present with your family.

Maybe you’re like us, taking turns.
Or maybe you’ve chosen to prioritise family time, and your own self-care has taken a hit.

For a while, that was us.
One of us training.
One of us with our girl.
Always swapping… but missing each other in the process.

So we changed it.

We’ve started a Sunday routine that works for all three of us... movement, fresh air, and proper family time.

We choose a different location each week.

Sometimes it’s a trip to Rabbit Island to play on the beach and take it in turns to run around the island.

Sometimes it’s a hike for Rae, and we take it in turns to do a hill run..

Sometimes it’s a trip to the park, where one of us does a workout while the other plays with Rae.

We all have time together, and then we swap, so everyone gets a moment to move and recharge.

Not a runner? That’s okay.
It could be a walk, a bike ride, or any activity that makes you feel good and takes care of your body.

It doesn't have to be perfect.
Just finding a way to move and take care of ourselves without losing this.

A few months ago, following my races in Sweden, I stopped chasing fast times and let my body have some well deserved rest.

No intervals.
No all-out efforts.
No “just one more rep” mentality.

I kept running, but at a pace that felt kind to my body.
I focused on deep core strength, mobility, controlled plyometrics, and some steady hill work. Nothing extreme. Just consistent, intentional work.

Yesterday, I went out for my first fast 5K in months…

…and knocked 11 seconds off my personal best.

No magic session.
No secret workout.
Just a body that felt stronger, more coordinated, and fresher than it had in a long time.

Sometimes performance doesn’t come from pushing harder.
Sometimes it comes from stepping back, fixing the foundations, and giving your body space to rebuild.

If you’re in a season where things feel slower, heavier, or more frustrating than they used to - don’t panic.

A well-timed “down phase” isn’t lost fitness.
It’s an investment.

Slow down the pace.
Tighten up the foundations.
Let the body absorb the work.

Then watch what happens when you ask it to go fast again.

Mums, this one’s for you 💛

Our Rebuild & Relearn – Mums & Bubs Postnatal Program starts next week 🙌

If you’re a new mum, or perhaps your kids are at school already, but you never quite got around to doing the recovery work — this class is for you.

Feeling sore or out of touch with your body? Dealing with incontinence? Want to get back to the things you love without worrying about injury? Or just jump on the trampoline with your kids worry-free? It starts here.

Two hours a week for eight weeks is all it takes. A little time for you now can make a big difference in the years to come. You deserve to feel strong, capable, and at home in your body again.

Plunket volunteers are there to help with your little one, so you can focus on yourself. You’ll leave each session feeling relaxed, accomplished, and part of a lovely, supportive community (with plenty of post-class coffee catch-ups).

Classes:
• Wednesday 9:30–10:30am
• Friday 1:25–2:25pm

Cost:
• $10 per class when attending both sessions each week (recommended for best results)
• $12.50 per class if attending once per week (best supplemented with at-home practice)

Meet Lauren — a brilliant example of what happens when determination meets the right support.

Back in August, Lauren came to me wanting strength training to support her ultra prep for the 50k Spectacle. She was juggling part-time work, three kids, and an injured knee (a minor meniscus tear that flared with long runs and deep bends). She's not a fan of commercial gyms, so having a private space to train in made all the difference.

She knew she needed accountability, alignment-focused strength work, and a trainer who programmed specifically for her — so she committed to twice-weekly sessions and kept up her own pre/post-run routine.

The result? Less pain, more strength, and far more confidence heading into her race.

Fast forward to last weekend…
She absolutely nailed her race. She’s chuffed, I’m chuffed, and honestly? This is exactly why I love what I do.

⬇️ Lauren’s message to me;

'Sam I enjoyed every minute of it! Thank you so much for getting me to this place. I felt so prepared out there and stoked with my time 8 hours 47.

I'm so tired now and very sore but felt strong esp at the end! Thank you!!!'

If you’ve got a hectic life, kids who need you, or an injury in the mix — you can still build the strength to chase the big stuff.

Lauren’s proof. And I’m right here to help you do it too. 💪✨

“You want to write a post about me? I haven’t done anything special…”

This is something Melissa genuinely believes – and honestly, one of the reasons I’m writing this. Because from where I’m standing, she’s doing a whole lot worth celebrating.

Melissa is a full-time working mum of four, and somehow still finds the time and energy to show up, train consistently, and quietly put in the work. We first met on a first aid course, clicked straight away, and before long she was joining us at Playfit group fitness – stepping outside her comfort zone and giving things like monkey bars, playground circuits and my many outlandish games a go.

She has proven she’s far more capable than she ever gave herself credit for (even if she still won’t admit it). She regularly pushes the limits of her fear of heights, has achieved her goal of improving her upper body strength – shown by her progress on the monkey bars and her next-level push-ups. Also, her leg strength is unrivaled, even by the boys. Sorry :P

Every 5–6 weeks she comes in for a personalised program and technique session to support her running, alignment, and injury prevention… because yes, in between parenting and work, she also runs ultras for “fun.” The long ones. In steep terrain. For hours. And keeps getting better every year.

She’s completed events like:

The Spectacle

WUU2K 64km

South Island Ultra

And is currently training for Old Ghost Road 85km

She’s competitive in her age group and has recently improved her 5k pace from 7m30s/km to 4m31s/km.

Not everyone trains with this level of consistency, determination, and self-motivation – even when life is busy. Melissa – thank you for trusting me with your training, your ambition, and your goals. You’re an inspiration to your family, to our whole Playfit crew, and to anyone watching thinking, “maybe I could do that too.”

Because you’ve proved something simple but powerful:

When you want something – and you’re willing to put in the work – you can achieve it. 💪🔥

What started out as my least favourite race has somehow muscled its way into second place, right behind the 12k. The 100m course just gets under your skin. There’s something addictive about studying every detail, working out where you can shave off a second or two, and then hurling yourself at it to see if you can make it happen. It really brings out the skill of the sport—the technical side I’m itching to sharpen after watching all the other races.

This time, I absolutely sent it. Smooth on the monkey bars, flying over the wall, confident on the balance beam. By my rough count, I’d already clawed back three or four seconds. In my head I was yelling, “I’m doing it, I’m going to beat my time, this is awesome!”

And then came the half-moon holds. My arms—still wrecked from the 12k an hour earlier—just gave up. The tank was empty. One second I was charging, the next I was dangling there like a limp noodle, swinging and laughing, realising: maybe not this time. 🤣

Still, I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face. I knew I wasn’t catching my competitor—she was a full 21 seconds faster—but the real race was me against myself, and I know I can be so much quicker.

That little course is one I’ll be back for, with fresher arms and a sharper plan. Watching elite athletes fly through in under 30 seconds, and over-60s giving it everything—it’s impossible not to love this sport.

Yet another day of incredible racing out on the 3k course — such a fun course with so many epic obstacles! 💪🇳🇿

So proud of all our Kiwis crossing the line today 🙌 The grit out there was unreal — some managed to hang on to a band or two (or three in Caitlyn’s case 👏), and James brought it home with one. Couldn’t be happier for him; he worked so hard for that result and absolutely earned it 🖤🇳🇿

For me (and a few teammates), it all came undone on the Gatorade rig (the penultimate obstacle). Forearms blown, our final bands were cut, so close to the finish. Gutting to cross without a time — but through the tears came hugs, support, and the fire to come back stronger. 🔥

When we first came out here, I told James this was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. The cost, the hours of training… surely just once. But the moment I came off that rig, I knew it would stay with me until we came back. OCR is addictive — not just because you want to do better, but because of the atmosphere, the friendships, the shared struggle and celebration. I couldn’t ask for a better team beside me, or a better community to be part of. 🖤

Thanks again to our sponsors for getting us out here. It truly is a life changing experience!

The dilemma. 😬

I’ve just finished 14th in the 100m races and made it through to the knockout rounds today — so stoked for the opportunity and feeling fairly confident I can improve my time. Super keen to see how far I can go.

But here’s the catch… the 100m knockout is at 2:50pm, and my 12k race with 40 obstacles is scheduled at 12:50pm. I’m so excited to get out there and have fun on the course… but I know there’s no way I’ll finish with all my bands.

Either way, my forearms are going to be toasted, my energy drained… and that means my 100m performance could be shot.

At the same time, the forecast is looking ugly — bad weather could hit, and if I skip the 12k, I might still fall off the first obstacle of the 100m. Game over.

So… what should I do?! 🤯
