Tired, run down, or struggling to concentrate? Low iron can show up in subtle ways. Here’s what to look out for:

- You feel tired or lethargic
- You’re often irritable or grumpy
- You may get frequent infections
- You often feel the cold

If you have one or several of these signs and symptoms you may be low in iron.
Make an appointment with your GP to get your iron stores checked.

Are you getting enough iron in your diet? It’s probably not something you pause and think about often. Iron is essential for transporting oxygen throughout our bodies to help create energy that keeps us active and alert.

It's concerning that 30% of the world's population suffers from iron deficiency. This is particularly seen among women and children in New Zealand.

It's a great opportunity for us to take stock of our diet and see if there are any small changes we can make to ensure we’re getting enough iron.

It’s important to do so, as low iron levels can cause tiredness and impact our ability to concentrate.

Not all iron is created equal but what you put on your plate can make a big difference. Try mixing up your proteins with a combo of animal and plant-based sources. Haem iron (the kind found in meat) is easier for your body to absorb, but plant-based options still bring plenty of benefits to the table.

Want to give your iron levels a little boost? Pair your meat with veggies, add a hit of vitamin C (think tomatoes, citrus, or capsicum), and aim for some lean red meat a few times a week.

Your body will love the iron upgrade!

World Iron Awareness Week is coming and our friends Beef and Lamb New Zealand are putting on an epic event!

On 18 October at 8 AM, participants are invited to gather at the parkrun flags in Auckland’s iconic Cornwall Park for a relaxed 5KM walk, jog, or run. The event promises fresh air, complimentary beef burgers, and an energising playlist curated by Nathan Fry to keep spirits high.

Beef + Lamb NZ Ambassador Stacey Waaka will be on hand to inspire and motivate attendees. The morning will also feature goodie bags, spot prizes, a lively BBQ, and plenty of engaging conversation. Families, dogs, prams, or groups of friends are all welcome to join! The goal is simple: to get moving and fuel well with the Iron to Move initiative.
