Your skin remembers every summer.

Many of us grew up in a time when sunscreen wasn’t a daily habit. We spent summers at the beach, gardening, walking, boating, watching sports, or simply enjoying the sunshine without thinking too much about protecting our skin.

The thing about UV exposure is that it accumulates over time. The sun damage we see in our 50s, 60s and beyond often began decades earlier. It can show up as pigmentation, redness, uneven skin tone, broken capillaries, and changes in skin texture.

The good news?

It’s never too late to start protecting your skin, and it’s never too late to explore treatments that can help address some of the visible signs of sun damage.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a treatment commonly used to target pigmentation, sun damage, redness, and age spots, helping create a clearer, more even-looking complexion.

While we can’t change the summers gone by, we can support healthier skin moving forward.

And that starts with one simple habit: applying sunscreen daily.

Do you wear sunscreen every day, even in winter?

Making small, thoughtful changes can really enhance your appearance.

Appearance medicine is not about changing who you are. It helps soften, refresh, and highlight your natural features so you still look like yourself, just a bit more rested and confident.

Everyone’s face is unique, so a personalised consultation matters. We listen to your concerns and look at your facial structure, skin, and goals before suggesting any treatments.

Treatment areas may include:

✨ Fine lines and wrinkles
✨ Volume loss
✨ Skin texture and quality
✨ Facial balance and harmony
✨ Tired-looking features
✨ Natural rejuvenation

The best results are subtle, balanced, and designed just for you.

Our next Appearance Medicine Clinic will be held on Monday, 22 June.

We have sent out an email with our upcoming clinic dates.

If you are not getting these emails but would like to, just send us a message or contact the clinic. We will add you to our mailing list.

Interested in appearance medicine? Book a consultation with Dianne so we can talk about what suits you and your skincare goals.

What Exactly Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is becoming more popular as a gentle and non-invasive way to help keep your skin healthy and glowing.

This therapy uses certain wavelengths of red and near-infrared light that reach into your skin and support your body’s natural repair. As we get older, our bodies make less collagen, which can lead to more fine lines, less firmness, and skin that doesn’t look as bright as before.

Red light therapy can boost collagen, improve blood flow, and lower inflammation. That’s why many people use it to support healthy aging and better skin.

People often like red light therapy because it feels relaxing, doesn’t hurt, and you don’t need any recovery time. It’s an easy way to help your skin do its job and look healthier.

Have you tried red light therapy, or is it something you’ve been curious about?

Nobody notices your wrinkles as much as you do.
We see every line.
Every change.
Every tiny detail when we look in the mirror.

We compare ourselves to old photos.
We zoom in on things nobody else notices.
We focus on what has changed rather than on everything that remains beautiful.

But here's the reality.
Most people don't see your wrinkles first.

They notice your smile.
Your kindness.
Your confidence.
The way you make them feel.

True confidence doesn't come from having perfect skin.
It comes from accepting that every laugh line, every crease and every year tells part of your story.

Be kind to the woman in the mirror.

She deserves it.

If your skin has become drier, more sensitive, or less radiant after 45, Vitamin B3 could be an ingredient worth knowing about.

Also known as niacinamide, Vitamin B3 has become one of the most respected ingredients in professional skincare, and for good reason.

As we age, our skin naturally changes. It may feel drier than it once did, become more sensitive, or lose some of its natural glow. While many people focus on treating individual concerns, niacinamide works by supporting overall skin health.

It helps strengthen the skin barrier, improve hydration, calm visible redness, and promote a brighter, more even-looking complexion. Healthy skin starts with a healthy barrier, and that’s where niacinamide really shines.

One of the reasons we love many Environ formulations is that they combine ingredients such as niacinamide, Vitamin A, antioxidants, and peptides to support healthy, resilient skin over the long term.

There is no single miracle ingredient when it comes to ageing well. Instead, it’s about giving your skin the support it needs to stay strong, comfortable, and healthy through every stage of life.

Have you heard of niacinamide before, or is this a new ingredient for you?

Your skin is a reflection of more than skincare.

We often spend time searching for the perfect serum, moisturiser or treatment, but the truth is that our skin reflects what's happening inside our bodies too. When we're stressed, running on little sleep, or not nourishing ourselves well, our skin can often be the first place it shows up. It may look duller, feel drier, appear more tired, or simply not have the healthy glow we're used to seeing.

That's because healthy skin isn't just about what we put on it. It's also influenced by how we live, how we rest, and how we care for ourselves every day.

Beautiful skin is supported by good skincare, but it's also supported by sleep, nutrition, hydration, movement, and stress management.

Which do you think impacts your skin the most?

Stress, sleep, or nutrition?

Then your makeup stops behaving.
The same foundation. The same routine.
But suddenly it settles into lines you swear weren’t there before.

You start wondering:
“Am I using the wrong products?”
“Do I need a new foundation?”
“Am I doing something wrong?”

Trust me, you’re probably not doing anything wrong. As we age, collagen, elastin and natural hydration gradually decline. Your skin isn’t failing you. It’s changing. And it needs a different kind of support.

The truth?

Your skin is changing because your biology is changing. Understanding that is the first step to supporting your skin differently. Let’s chat

Chronic inflammation is one of the biggest things we see affecting skin health over time.

Sometimes it shows up as redness, sensitivity, breakouts, dehydration, or skin that suddenly seems reactive to everything.

Other times, it’s less obvious.

Skin can start looking tired, dull, uneven, or age more quickly because it’s constantly sitting in a low-level state of stress and inflammation beneath the surface. What many people don’t realise is that inflammation isn’t always caused by one single thing.

Often it’s a combination of: stress, over-exfoliation, too many active products, sun exposure, lack of barrier support, hormones, and constantly changing routines.

This is why more intensity isn’t always the answer.

At skinmatters, we spend a lot of time focusing on calming, strengthening, and supporting skin function first because healthy skin behaves very differently when inflammation is reduced.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your skin is stop fighting it.

Winter is one of the best times to start IPL treatments. Why?

Because IPL targets pigmentation, redness, and sun damage in the skin, the skin becomes more sensitive to UV exposure after treatment while it heals.

During winter, we naturally spend less time in the strong sun, making it a safer and more effective time to treat concerns such as sun damage, uneven pigmentation, redness, broken capillaries, and overall skin rejuvenation.

It’s also the season when many people start thinking differently about their skin. Not just covering up damage for summer but actually treating it properly.

One of the things I love about IPL is that it can create gradual, natural-looking improvement over time. Skin starts looking clearer, brighter, and more even without looking overdone.

As always, the most important part is understanding whether IPL is the right treatment for your skin in the first place.

Not every skin needs the same approach.

Today is a very special day, my mum turns 93. ❤️

Ninety-three years of life, love, resilience, heartbreak, family, laughter, and strength.

She has lived through extraordinary change here in New Zealand.
She was born into a completely different world, long before technology connected us instantly, before modern conveniences, before so much of what we now take for granted.

But what touches me most is not simply what she has witnessed historically… it is what she has carried personally.

She has known the joy and exhaustion of motherhood. The deep love of family. The heartbreak of losing her beloved. Moments of uncertainty, sacrifice, and grief that quietly shape a person forever.

And through it all, she continued forward with grace. Strong when life required strength. Compassionate when others needed care. And still able to find laughter, warmth, and joy in everyday moments.

There is something incredibly grounding about women of her generation, resilient, humble, practical, and deeply devoted to those they love.

At 93, she reminds me that beauty is not simply what we see on the outside.
It is found in resilience.
In kindness.
In wisdom.
In the way someone continues to love despite everything life places before them.

Happy 93rd birthday, Mum.
What a gift you are to our family. ❤️
