Meet Dr Janice Vermaak 👋 A South African-trained GP whose focus on menopause care grew from her own perimenopause experience — she knows first-hand how much difference the right support makes. A big advocate for strength training and healthy ageing, she recently finished her first half marathon. As she puts it: "It truly takes a village — and I am honoured to be part of yours."

I’d just turned 40 when perimenopause hit me.

And she hit me hard.

I was working as a GP
I was physically fit.
I had a lovely husband
Two great kids

But perimenopause didn’t care about any of that.

My hips hurt.
I was exhausted all the time
I kept forgetting people’s names
I started having terrible headaches.
I felt on-edge and anxious about everything
I couldn’t sleep.

And I became mean to the people I loved.

Despite being a doctor - I didn’t know it was perimenopause.
I thought I had some disease
I thought I had a problem in my marriage
I thought I was mad.

I blamed a lot of other things - and perimenopause almost got away with it.

For other women - she does get away with it.

I see women in my clinic who look back and realise it wasn’t stress.
It wasn’t her marriage.
It wasn’t an illness.

It was perimenopause.

From our mid 30s, we can start having hormonal shifts. By our 40s, they are often in full swing.
So, if you’re struggling with your mood, sleep, energy, joints - or you just don’t feel like yourself anymore - please see your doctor or reach out to the Menodoctor clinic for an appointment.

Perimenopause is the master of disguise.
She had me fooled. Don’t let her fool you.
