Make sure you have your say and please share with friends, family and whanau to ensure as many people get to have their say.

Kia ora 👋 Disabled people, families, whānau and carers are being invited to help shape further improvements to Disability Support Services (DSS).

We want to improve services in key areas that the disability community has told us matter most to them.

We are building on what the community has told us over the past two years. This feedback has already helped shape some important changes across DSS, and we know there is more to do.

Now we want to know what good support looks like.

From 8 June to 31 July, DSS will be running a community consultation focused on key areas including:
💬 Outcomes that matter, including how supports make a difference in disabled people’s everyday lives and safety
💬 Earlier, proactive and planned support as people’s needs change over time
💬 Feedback and complaints processes that make it easier to speak up about DSS services
💬 Better options for carer respite, making it easier for family, whānau and carers to take a break
💬 More choice and control in services, including more flexibility in supports funded outside of flexible funding
💬 Improved information and advice to make supports and services easier to access

We are seeking feedback from people who receive DSS funding, and people who support or advocate for those who do.

From today, you can read the consultation documents and register for workshops ahead of the consultation officially opening on 8 June.

You can take part in a way that works for you, including online and in-person workshops, written or recorded submissions, and an online survey. Workshops will be running throughout June and July.

Your input will help shape the next improvements to services and supports.

Visit the DSS website below to read the consultation documents, learn more about the consultation, and register for upcoming workshops 👇

This consultation is separate from the Disability Support Services Bill and is focused on improvements to DSS-funded supports and services.

The Bill is a separate Parliamentary process that sets the legal framework for DSS.

Debbie Ward from CCS Disability Action does a great job explaining the concerns the disability community has with both the process and content of the Disbility Support Services Bill that is currently making its way (very quickly) to Select Committee. Make sure you have your say.

The Government introduced the Disability Support Services Bill to Parliament on Monday 18 May 2026. Hon Louise Upston, Minister for Disability Issues, says the Bill will bring "clarity and stability" to the system that supports thousands of disabled people. Many disabled people, whānau and advocates have real concerns at the timeframes for consultation and what the legislation might mean for disabled people and their families/whanau. SILC also shares these concerns and urges the government to slow down and undertake meaningful consultation with disabled people, their families/whanau and the woder disability sector.

The attached link is to an article provided by CCS Disability Action and is well worth reading as it highlights a number of concerns shared across the sector. Thank you to our friends at CCS Disability Action for allowing us to share this article.

SILC are proud to celebrate Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori - Māori Language week.

Last week in our office Māori KUPU (Māori words) were placed in and around our common areas to identify what they translate to in Māori.

“Kia Kaha Māori ”cards have been made up with simple to use every day phrases that staff can use throughout their day.

At the beginning of each day an email gets sent out for Te Rerenga Kupu o Te Rā (The phrase of the day) staff are encouraged to respond back regardless of our level of competence or confidence, Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori is about encouraging everyone to promote the use of the Māori language.

Why do we celebrate?
To commemorate the presentation of the 1972 Māori language petition on September 14th, 1972 to parliament, It has been marked every year since 1975.

Kei te pehea koe e whakanui ana i te wiki o te reo Māori?
How are you celebrating Māori language week ?

As a 23 year old with a disability, I require support with many aspects of my life. I am looking for someone who wants to work differently and is willing to learn the role of a community Support Worker.

This role would suit someone who is keen to engage with my interests and daily activities in and around the community, having fun along the way. Like many other young adults, I enjoy church on Sunday mornings, swimming, eating out, writing raps, quiz nights, concerts and computer games.

Being a ‘people person’, having a good sense of humour, patience, a motivated personality and being a fan of sports (especially NBA) are all advantageous.

Previous support work experience is not essential, as training will be provided. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain a Level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Health & Wellbeing.

For more information about this position please email [email protected] OR apply at https://silc.qjumpersjobs.co/jobs/details/Support_Worker_-_Physical_Disability-1078097

Please note that the successful candidate will be employed by SILC Limited.
