I often get asked, “Why is honey so expensive?” 🍯

And I always say — because it’s not an artificially made spread like Marmite or peanut butter. Honey has to be made by bees.

Millions of flowers are visited, our bees are cared for all year round, hives are transported and checked, honey is harvested, extracted, tested and packed — and at the end of it all, Mother Nature decides how much we actually get.

There’s no factory making more if we run out. No recipe we can just double.

It’s bees, flowers, weather and beekeepers. 🐝

And when you buy local honey, you’re not just buying a jar of something sweet — you’re supporting the bees, the land and the beekeepers who look after them.

There can be a lot of confusion around MGO and UMF when you’re choosing Mānuka honey, so here’s a simple explanation.

MGO (Methylglyoxal) is the naturally occurring compound that gives Mānuka honey its unique antibacterial properties. It’s measured in a laboratory and the number on the jar tells you the minimum amount present in every kilogram of honey. Simply put, the higher the MGO rating, the higher the concentration.

UMF (Unique Mānuka Factor) is a grading system and trademark used by licensed members of the UMF Association. Along with MGO, it includes additional markers that verify the honey is genuine Mānuka.

Both systems are measuring the quality of Mānuka honey—they’re just presented differently.

As a rough guide:
• UMF 10+ ≈ MGO 263+
• UMF 12+ ≈ MGO 356+
• UMF 15+ ≈ MGO 514+
• UMF 20+ ≈ MGO 829+

Our Mānuka honey is independently tested, and we choose to display the actual MGO result on every jar so you know exactly what you’re buying.

At Black Shepherd Apiaries, we believe transparency matters. Every batch is tested, every result is backed by laboratory analysis, and we proudly pack our honey right here in New Zealand.

Whether you’re buying from us or someone else, look for a tested MGO or UMF rating. A genuine producer should always be able to stand behind what’s inside the jar.
