NZTA - AWAKINO GORGE UPDATE - 02ND JUNE 2026

Kia ora,

This is an urgent update on State Highway 3 (SH3) through the Awakino Gorge.

We have closed SH3 through the Awakino Gorge because significant rainfall has made the route unsafe for travel. The closure is in place from the rest area near the Awakino Historic Tunnel through to the intersection of SH3 with Manganui Road.

Our number one priority is keeping people safe. We have not made this decision lightly, but current conditions mean the road is currently not safe for traffic to use.

Road users are being advised to use SH4 and SH1 as the alternative state highway route and should not travel to the closure area. Please follow all signage, traffic management, and any instructions from onsite staff.

A geotechnical engineer is on site and will review conditions at 1pm. We will provide a further update by 2pm today (2 June). Updates are also available on Journey Planner: journeys.nzta.govt.nz

The gorge remains an active worksite with active slip areas, and conditions can change quickly. A Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP) guides how we respond when conditions become riskier than normal, including rainfall and site checks. We will restore access as soon as it is safe to do so.

We know this will be frustrating and disruptive for communities, local businesses and freight operators.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Ngā mihi,

Taranaki maintenance

New Zealand is on the Ring of Fire, which contains about 90% of the Earth’s active volcanoes. There are 11 active volcanic areas in New Zealand.

In New Zealand, the most widespread and disruptive volcanic hazard is ash.

If you are at risk from volcanic ash fall, there are some extra things you can add to your supplies:
🌋 Certified disposable dust masks (rated P2 or N95) and goggles
🌋 Plastic wrap or plastic sheeting (to keep ash out of electronics)
🌋 Cleaning supplies including an air duster, a broom, a shovel, and a vacuum cleaner with spare bags and filters
🌋 Heavy-duty plastic bags to dispose of ash

🗳 Voting Matters for Our Ward – TET Elections!

Voting papers will be arriving in your letterboxes this week, and this is our chance to make sure our community continues to be strongly represented.
In past elections, our ward has had low voter turnout, and that directly affects how many local candidates—people who actually live here and understand our needs—are elected to represent us. When our ward has strong local voices at the table, we all feel the impact.
Over the past term, our community has benefited from significant support, including: • First response medical packs • Clinic upgrades • Operational support • Financial support for many community organisations

These gains happened because we had people in the room who understood our challenges and advocated for us.
Your vote helps ensure that continues.

📬 Keep an eye on your mailbox this week ⏰ Voting closes 12 noon, Tuesday 16 June 2026

Let’s lift our turnout and make sure our community’s voice stays strong.

🗳️ Voting has opened today for the Taranaki Electricity Trust board elections, giving eligible residents the chance to choose the six trustees who will manage millions of dollars in community grants.

Twelve candidates have stepped forward for the 2026 term. The trust area is split into two zones. Ward A covers the North Taranaki area within the New Plymouth District and has attracted eight nominations. Ward B covers the Stratford and South Taranaki districts where four candidates are competing for representation.

According to the official Taranaki Electricity Trust election notice, all current trustees are required to stand down at the end of their term. Voting documents are currently being sent by post to eligible residential electors within the trust's boundaries.

Elections are independently managed by Election Services. The official election day is June 16, meaning all postal votes must be completed and returned to the electoral officer before noon on that date to be counted.

The Taranaki Electricity Trust was formed in 1993 following the merger of New Plymouth Energy and the Taranaki Electric Power Board. The charitable trust receives investment income and distributes it to local community groups, sports clubs, and facilities across the region.

In recent months, the trust adopted a modernised Trust Deed to clarify governance rules and election processes. They have also transitioned to a new online grants system called Fluxx. Old PDF application forms will only be accepted until the end of next month.

Residents who live within the trust boundaries but do not receive voting papers in the post this week are encouraged to check their status on the electoral roll or contact Election Services directly.
