Knowing your pain relief options during pregnancy can make the decision feel much less overwhelming when the moment comes.
Gas & air
🌬️ The “breathe in” option
Helps you cope, works quickly and wears off quickly, so you can use it with each contraction. And the good news is, every labour is different. Even if you did not like it last time, it might be just what you need this time.
Morphine
💉 The “take the edge off” option
Helps you relax and cope, but does not block the pain completely.
Epidural
🩺 The “numbing” option
The most effective pain relief of these options, as it numbs the nerves carrying pain from the lower body. It can take around 40 minutes from preparing and inserting the epidural to feeling the full effect of the pain relief.
Remifentanil
👩⚕️ The “fast in, fast out” option
A fast acting intravenous opioid that requires close monitoring. In some New Zealand maternity settings, it may be used as an alternative when an epidural is not suitable or cannot be used.
Sterile water injections
💧 A quick to administer option that may help with back pain while allowing you to remain mobile. It is not offered everywhere, so ask your care provider whether they are trained to provide it. More research is being done on this technique, and our understanding of its use in labour continues to develop.
These are different methods, with different effects and different considerations. And remember, you do not have to choose just one. Your needs may change as your labour progresses.
Make sure you check out the reel on my IG for non-pharmaceutical comfort measures during labour too.
You deserve to know your options before labour begins. 💛
