Update – Tuesday 21 April, 6.30am

Mōrena Kāpiti 💛

While our little corner of paradise has been spared the worst of the complex weather system moving through the region, not all of our neighbours have been as fortunate. Overnight, there were reports of evacuations across the Wellington region due to rising Hutt River levels, flooding, and slips. Our thoughts are with those affected – please stay safe and look out for one another.

Here’s what you need to know:
🌧️ A yellow heavy rain watch and yellow strong wind watch remains in place for Kāpiti through to 9pm tonight, with a red heavy rain warning in place for Wellington and an orange heavy rain warning for the Tararua Range through to midnight.
🌧️ The ground is sodden so please stay clear of rivers and streams and stay out of floodwaters.
🌧️ People are advised to avoid travel across the Wellington region unless absolutely necessary. Several roads across the region are closed and there may be disruptions to public transport. Check the Metlink website for the latest travel information and NZTA for local road closures.
🌧️ For information about local schools, people are advised to contact schools directly.

We are keeping a close eye on this situation, and our crews will be carrying out inspections across the district this morning. Further information about Council services and facilities and the status of local roads can be found on our website.

📞If you spot a weather-related issue that needs our attention, call us on 0800 486 486. If it’s an emergency call 111.
