Sometimes the biggest difference is having someone beside you who understands why you’re doing the exercise.
At NextStep Whakatāne, our one-on-one coaching with an Exercise Physiologist is completely centred around the individual.
Your condition. Your current ability. Your goals. And what you want to be able to do more of outside the gym.
That means exercises can be adapted, progressed and changed as you go — rather than trying to fit you into a programme that wasn’t designed for you.
For many of the people who come through our doors, that individual attention is particularly important because exercise hasn’t always worked for them in the past.
Start by understanding the person. Then build the programme around them.

There’s something different about training alongside people who understand the journey.
Our small group sessions at NextStep Whakatāne bring people together to work on their own goals, at their own level, with our coaches there to provide support and adjust things when needed.
Everyone in the group might be doing something slightly different — and that’s exactly how it should be.
But they’re also sharing the experience. Showing up together, having a laugh, encouraging each other and becoming part of a community where exercise doesn’t feel like something they have to navigate alone.
Because sometimes progress isn’t just about getting stronger.
It’s about finding somewhere you feel like you belong.

Plenty of ways to get your heart working at NextStep Whakatāne. ❤️

Cardio doesn’t have to mean running on a treadmill.

Having a range of equipment means we can find an option that works for your body, your ability and your starting point — whether that’s walking, cycling, seated cardio or something with a little more support.

Improving your cardiovascular fitness can make a real difference to how you feel during everyday activities, helping you build the capacity to do more before fatigue sets in.

The best cardio option?

The one you can do safely, consistently, and progressively.

There's a lot more to boxing than throwing a punch.

For people living with Parkinson's disease, boxing can be a practical way to work on balance, coordination, reaction time, posture, and confidence—all while exercising in a supportive group environment.

Every movement can be adapted to suit the individual, whether that means working on footwork, weight shifting, reaching, or simply moving with more confidence than last week.

Just as important is the community.

Training alongside others who understand the journey creates an environment where people encourage each other, celebrate progress, and keep showing up.

That's what our Parkinson's group is all about.

Building strength. Improving movement. And helping people continue doing more of the things that matter to them.

Walking is more than just putting one foot in front of the other.
At NextStep Whakatāne, we are using the Rifton TRAM to help create a safe, supported environment for members working on functional walking.
The support allows us to focus on the things that actually matter — weight shift, stepping, posture, control, and gradually building confidence through the movement.
For some people, walking practice without the right support simply isn’t realistic yet. The TRAM gives us a way to meet someone at their current ability and progressively increase what they can do.
The goal isn’t to make walking look perfect.
It’s to build capacity, confidence, and as much independence as possible over time.
That’s what good rehab-informed training should look like: assess where someone is, provide the right level of support, and progress from there.

Getting out of the wheelchair can change the challenge completely.

For some of our members, spending time off the chair allows us to work on core strength, balance, posture, and trunk control in ways that simply aren’t possible while seated.

Every movement becomes an opportunity for the body to work a little harder.

It’s not about leaving the wheelchair behind—it’s about creating the right environment to challenge the body safely and effectively.

These small moments add up over time, building strength, confidence, and functional ability that can carry over into everyday life.

At NextStep New Zealand, every exercise has a purpose, and every program is tailored to the individual.

Because recovery isn’t about doing what everyone else does.
It’s about finding the right challenge for you.

💪 Helping people discover what’s still possible.

Is your core actually strong enough?

Your core is more than just abs — it includes the muscles around your spine, hips, and pelvis that keep you stable, upright, and pain-free every single day.

Try this simple test: Can you hold a plank for 30-60 seconds with a flat back, neutral spine, and no hip sagging? If not, your core might need some attention!

At Next Step, we assess all areas of your core — not just the surface muscles — and build a programme tailored specifically to you. From deep stabilisers to rotational strength, we’ve got it covered.

🦵 Don’t skip your calves!

Your calf muscles do more than you think — they power every step you take, support your ankles, pump blood back to your heart, and play a huge role in balance and stability. Yet they’re one of the most overlooked muscle groups in training!

Adding calf-focused exercises into your routine can improve your posture, reduce injury risk, and keep you moving strong for years to come.

Strong calves = a stronger foundation.

Want a full exercise program designed to improve overall body strength — including the calves — book at appointment today!

Did you know exercise can sharpen your coordination?

Movement isn’t just about fitness — it trains your brain and body to work together. Activities like balance exercises and resistance training strengthen the neural pathways that control how you move, react, and stay steady on your feet.

Whether you’re an athlete, recovering from injury, or just wanting to move better in daily life — consistent exercise is one of the best tools for improving coordination, reducing fall risk, and building body confidence.

Start small, move often, and watch the difference!
