For some, the wait between referral and treatment brings its own load appointments, questions, a system that doesn't always make it easy.

If having someone alongside you through that would help, your local Māori health provider may be able to support you through treatment, appointments, and the in-between.

You don't have to walk this alone.

E te whānau, the wait doesn't always end once treatment starts but it doesn't always start straightforward either. Researcher Dr Sue Crengle recently spoke about the barriers whānau face even before diagnosis: getting timely GP appointments, whakamā about symptoms, long travel distances, delays through referral and diagnostic pathways. However long your haerenga has been, we see it.

Whakanuia te mana o te hauora Māori 💚

Yesterday we gathered in Whakatāne, at Rangihouhiri marae, for the inaugural Te Moana a Toi IMPB Hauora Māori Provider Day. An awesome opportunity to connect, kōrero, share whakaaro and celebrate the incredible mahi being led by our Hauora Māori providers across our rohe.

The day was about strengthening whanaungatanga, sharing insights, and working together to improve hauora outcomes for whānau. From kōrero around eco systems and collaboration to celebrating the dedication of our providers, the kaupapa reflected the strength, resilience and commitment of our hauora Māori workforce.

Ngā mihi nui to all who attended, contributed and continue to provide essential services that uplift the hauora of our whānau across Te Moana a Toi.

E te whānau, waiting is never really done alone even when it feels that way. It's the aunty who checks in, the phone call at the right moment, the whānau member who just sits with you without needing to fix anything.

However the wait looks for your whānau, that kind of support matters more than any system ever could.

E te whānau, the wait between finding something's not right and getting answers can feel like its own kind of hard, the not knowing, the checking the phone, appointments that take longer to come than they should.
We don't need numbers to know that's real.

Kei runga mātou i te huarahi, e te whānau! 🚐🌊

Te Moana ā Toi is hitting the road heading out across our rohe to meet kanohi ki te kanohi with our Provider workforce..

These regional Provider Roadshow Hui are working sessions between us, kaimahi and organisations who walk alongside whānau every day. They're not public events, and there's nothing whānau need to do we just want you to know what we're doing, and who we're doing it with.

At each stop, we're there to listen deeply to understand the realities, pressure points and aspirations of our Provider workforce, and to turn their voice into visible action. Each hui is grounded in its own local context, because every corner of Te Moana ā Toi carries its own story.

Why does this matter for whānau? Because stronger relationships with our providers means stronger hauora outcomes for you and your whānau. That's the kaupapa, and that's the road we're on. 💚

Kia ora e te whānau.

A while back, Te Aho o Te Kahu held hui across the motu, where over 2,500 Māori shared their own experiences of the cancer system what it's really like to navigate diagnosis and treatment as Māori.

One whānau member put it simply: "We need to be at the table or else it is all in vain." Their kōrero speaks to so much of what we've been sitting with this month trust, being heard, and wanting a system that's truly designed with whānau in mind.

You know your whānau's hauora better than anyone. Trust that.

If something doesn't feel right ask. If a referral's gone quiet ring and chase it. Ask where things are at, ask how long the wait is. You're not being a nuisance, you're advocating for your whānau. That's your right.
