On Sunday the 21st June, we arrive at the Winter Solstice, Yule, the longest night of the year for the Southern Hemisphere.
For our ancestors, this was a sacred threshold. The darkness had reached its greatest depth. The fields lay dormant, food stores were carefully tended, and the certainty of spring was still months away. Yet fires were lit, candles were kindled, and communities gathered to celebrate.
From a Daoist perspective, this is one of the most potent moments of the year. Winter belongs to the Water Element, to deep Yin energy, to stillness, rest, and conservation. The energy of nature is drawn inward. And yet, the moment Yin reaches its fullest expression is also the moment Yang begins to emerge.
