Today is International Day of the World's Indigenous People!

Guardians of nature: Indigenous lands cover about 28% of the world, sheltering most of the remaining global biodiversity and critical forests.
Wisdom and traditions: Their traditional knowledge systems offer sustainable solutions for fighting climate change and protecting natural resources.

Indigenous peoples protect the environment by using traditional ecological knowledge, sustainable land management, and sacred rules that limit over-use.
Although they make up a small part of the global population, they safeguard about 80% of the world's biodiversity through generational stewardship and community governance.

Amazon Promise is honored and proud to continue our work in indigenous communities of the Peruvian Amazon.

So glad to be back at the Amazon Promise house working with the team getting ready to send all the logistics (meds, medical supplies, equipment, food, water, chocolate ;)) out tomorrow morning. We'll be providing medical and dental care, laboratory analysis, hiv/std and general health education in several communities of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Jose Valles, Amazon Promise special projects manager, just returned from visiting the remote communities of Fatima and Villa Puerto Cruz where we have installed potable rainwater catchment systems

Working alongside community members, we performed comprehensive system maintenance and vital repairs to ensure a continuous, clean water supply for everyone.

The rivers are low, so reaching these communities was extremely challenging with long hikes and paddling small canoes through a swamp.

Thank you, Jose, for your continuous dedication to ensuring communities have clean water!

Amazon Promise educator, Angela Valcarcel, knows that showing up in some of the most unlikely places inspires people to listen, ask questions, and learn. Providing face-to-face, in-person health and wellness information to groups and individuals plays an important role in creating trust and rapport.

Today, Angela provided group and individual talks on HIV/STI prevention at the San Pedro/San Pablo fair in the Bella Vista neighborhood, then moved on to the Nanay medical center to continue her work.
Thank you, Angela!

¡Soy Capaz! is the educational branch of Amazon Promise.

As part of our ongoing work throughout the year, educator and patient advocate, Angela Valcarcel provides monthly workshops in the impoverished urban community of Belen on topics such as HIV prevention and domestic violence targeting diverse population groups. She also conducts house-to-house calls and provides individual counseling linking people to HIV services and the Emergency Center for Women (CEM) whom we partner with.
She recently had the opportunity to provide an educational talk to the elder community residing at the Algo Bello Para Dios convalescent home run by Father Raymond Portelli who is also a physician.

With her expertise, Angela not only provides essential health education during our remote jungle outreach clinics but also successfully navigates the obstacles that arise when patients encounter barriers to care. Her swift problem-solving skills enable patients who may otherwise feel lost and abandoned, to receive the urgent and follow-up care they desperately need.

Angela's dedication and compassion are integral to our mission, making her an indispensable asset in our pursuit of comprehensive care and health education for all.

Thank you Angela!
