The Cost of Crime
Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea a widely known province of peaceful communities and strong cultural identity. Yet in recent years, that image has been deeply shaken by waves of crime and violence that left many residents living in fear. During the height of this unrest, the province drew national attention as criminal activity escalated, and law enforcement struggled to contain it. Sea piracy, armed robberies, assaults, and killings became increasingly frequent, and the effects were felt not only in homes and villages, but also in the hospital’s wards....

The Cost of Crime
Milne Bay a widely known province of peaceful communities and strong cultural identity. Yet in recent years, that image has been deeply shaken by waves of crime and violence that left many residents living in fear. During the height of this unrest, the province drew national attention as criminal activity escalated, and law enforcement struggled to contain it (1,2). Sea piracy, armed robberies, assaults, and killings became increasingly frequent, and the effects were felt not only in homes and villages, but also in the hospital’s wards.
For those working on the frontline, the consequences of crime were immediate, graphic, and deeply traumatic. Violence did not remain an abstract issue discussed in public forums or reported in the news. It arrived at the doors of the emergency department in the form of gunshot wounds, bush knife wounds, shattered limbs, and young men fighting for their lives. Some patients survived long enough to reach the hospital. Others did not....

Pictures from the recent cyclone Maila MBPHA community health visit at Budibudi Island. By Dr.Ray Feluwa (Rural doctor)

Devastated by the cyclone these remote islands of Milne Bay were cut off from the rest of the country with no means of communication.

The health centre on the island which has never been used as it has limited to NO drugs or staff was used by the team to provide basic health services to affected communities.

A reminder that rural health services in PNG are neglected & struggling.

It doesnt have to take a natural disaster for us to take action.

Chest trauma is common in PNG.
Most chest trauma causes are from stab wounds either alcohol related or from domestic violence.
The burden of managing these preventable injuries is significant.
The cost of trauma in PNG is on average K45,900. Alcohol related injuries can cost as much as K1,417,023.
Medical care IS NOT FREE.
Alcohol related injuries must be charged.
Perpetrators must be disciplined.

The images show chest x-rays of chest trauma cases caused by sharp objects such as knives & spears.
Heamothorax: Collection of blood in the chest
Pneumothorax: Collection of air in the chest.
Most are managed with a chest tube insertion to remove the blood or air collections.
Severe cases will need open surgery to repair injured organs such as the lungs or heart.
