LAGAIP POTATO SEED MULTIPLIER A SUCCESS!

Living up to its name, Lagaip Poverty Relievers Association is a beacon of hope for up to three thousand people from 7 communities associated with the organization, in Enga Province.

Traditional farming activities for these communities have been given a new lease of life with support from the European Union-funded ‘Strengthening Integrated Sustainable Landscape Management Project’ in Enga Province of Papua New Guinea.

Cultivating organic potatoes for daily sustenance has been a practice for generations in this part of the country, where the climate is conducive to the crop. However not to an extent for commercial purposes.

Now with UNDP’s support, the Association and its members are able to produce for small-scale commercial gain. Being one of the pioneer beneficiaries of the Low-Value Grant provided under this United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) led project, the Association has successfully cultivated seven (7) hectares of organic potatoes and recently harvested 20 tonnes of fresh and seed potatoes.

This progress has led to communities selling fresh potatoes to local restaurants in Porgera, and in Wabag. While 5 tonnes from this harvest have been sold as fresh potatoes, the balance is kept as seeds to be used in the cultivation of 11 hectares of land.

This Low-Value Grant also also allowed the association to train 25 in-land fish farmers on how to farm for quality, and in large quantity for commercial purposes.

KINAPULAM: A MODEL OF INCLUSIVENESS & SUSTAINABILITY

A month after entering a partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Kinapulam Farmers’ Co-Operative Society has already cultivated one hectare of land for organic potato farming in Enga province.

Kinapulam is a grantee of the European Union-funded Enga Landscape Project, a UNDP project encouraging sustainable land use in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

More than five hundred men, women, and children from Kinapulam in Pilikambi LLG have benefited since the signing of the grant agreement.

Pilikambi Rural LLG is one of the four Local-Level Government Areas of Lagaip Porgera Electorate in Enga Province. Those who are part of the change have commended both partners for providing this life-changing opportunity.

“Living in poverty and not having access to basic government services, we never thought there was any other help apart from our government - until we got the funding from the European Union, through UNDP.

“Money earned from the sale of potatoes will pay school fees, transport fares, hospital fees, clothes, and other household needs.” The beneficiaries of Kinapulam Farmers Co-operative Society commented on the funding support.

Like all other grantees, Kinapulam’s activities are focused on helping the community members, especially women and youth, to increase sustainable agriculture practices in a climate-friendly manner.

Signing Agreements to Support Community-Based Projects in Enga Province through the EU’s Low Value Grants

The EU-Funded and UNDP implemented Enga Landscape Project is officially signing grants agreements with two new grantees, Kinapulam Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd and Yakam Resort Co-operative Society Limited on 06 May 2022 in Enga province.

While the country faces growing impacts of climate change, the five-year project ‘Strengthening Integrated Sustainable Landscape Management, SISLaM’ in Enga province, led by the UNDP and funded by the European Union, works on improving climate-friendly livelihoods with the aim to support the work of grantees in climate change, agriculture and nutrition, and land and biodiversity conservation in Enga Province.

These two new grant awards were selected from seven grant applicants during December 2021 round, following an extensive selection process. UNDP awarded the Low Value Grants of PGK 89,810 (around USD 25,500) and PGK 82,172 respectively to Kinapulam and to Yakam, funded by the European Union.
