Kapampangan homegrown food manufacturer Mekeni Food Corporation maintained its compliance with the Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) following a successful audit conducted by SGS, a globally recognized certification body.

The milestone reinforces Mekeniโ€™s standing as a Filipino brand that consistently meets stringent global food safety standards, further strengthening trust in locally-made products across international markets.

Mekeni Food Corporation maintained the FSSC 22000 Version 6 and GHP/HACCP (CXC 1-1969, Rev. 2022).

The FSSC 22000 certification is a globally recognized food safety management system that ensures organizations adhere to rigorous requirements in food safety, quality, and sustainability.

Mekeniโ€™s FSSC 22000 Version 6 certification is the latest version of the standard.

The GHP (Good Hygiene Practices) and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), meanwhile, are essential, complementary food safety systems

The GHP aims to control hazards and prevent contamination in the food environment, acting as the mandatory foundation (prerequisite program) before implementing HACCP.

HACCP, on the other hand, is a systematic, proactive approach to ensure food safety by focusing on preventing hazards rather than inspecting finished products.

โ€œMekeniโ€™s continued certification reflects its ongoing commitment to elevating Filipino-made products to world-class standards while ensuring consumer safety and product integrity,โ€ Mekeni Food Corporation President Prudencio โ€œPrudsโ€ Garcia said.

The latest certifications of Mekeni Food Corporation further boosts its competitiveness in the world market as both are internationally recognized standards used to ensure food safety in global supply chains.

Mekeni products are not only sold in Pampanga and the Philippines but are also bring exported and are now serving markets in 23 countries around the world which includes North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with major markets in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, the UK and, just recently entered the South Korean market.

Known for Philippine street food and meat products, Mekeni is a major provider of products for Filipino communities abroad, giving them โ€œa taste of homeโ€.

Officials of the Hann Foundation and the Local Government of Bamban in Tarlac Province signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on May 6, 2026 for the implementation of community projects, particularly the construction of an emergency hospital and a school building for Aeta students.

The MOA was signed by Bamban Mayor Joey Salting Jr., Hann Foundation Inc. Executive Director Ana Christi Galura, Bamban West District Public School District Supervisor Roberto Santos Jr., and Hann Foundation Corporate Finance Director Sheila Rivera during the Pampanga Press Club (PPC) KapiHann news forum at the Swissotel Clark.

The projects include the establishment of an emergency hospital at the Dapdap Resettlement, which will be developed at a coat of Php15 million, aimed at improving access to healthcare services for relocated families and nearby communities.

The construction of a school building in Sitio Gayaman Dos, Barangay Anupul under Project EskwelaHANN, meanwhile, will provide more children the opportunity to get an education.

Both projects will be funded by the Hann Foundation.

Also planned is the establishment of an Inclusive Learning Resource Center (ILRC) in Dapdap, as mandated by Republic Act No. 11650, to provide specialized support, assessment, and therapy services for learners with disabilities.

Hann Foundation Executive Director Ana Christi Galura said the projects aim to create a meaningful impact on the communities Hann serves.

โ€œBy providing assistance through these efforts in basic social services such as health and education, we are laying the foundations of building a better and more inclusive future for our kababayans in Bamban, Tarlac,โ€ Galura said.

She added that the foundation is not just building facilities, but ensuring inclusive growth where no one is left behind.

โ€œHopefully, the students who will be going to school in Malasa and Gayaman will be our future employees,โ€ she said.

At the same time, Mayor Salting said the projects will benefit underserved communities, particularly indigenous people living in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas and families affected by relocation programs.

โ€œThese projects are not only structures but a legacy of hope and progress. We express our profound gratitude to the Hann Foundation Inc. for its assistance in achieving our objective of a prosperous Bamban. This is proof that when the government, the private sector and the community come together, we can achieve progress,โ€ Salting said.

Hann Foundation Manager Ronnel Golimlim said the projects reflect their shared commitment to address the most fundamental needs of their adopted community of Bamban, which is health and education.

โ€œMore than the structures, the projects represent opportunity and dignity, especially those who have long been underserved such as the Ayta for them to have a better future,โ€ Golimlim said.

The long-term and sustainable projects highlights the crucial role of collaboration between the private sector and local government in delivering basic services and infrastructure in developing communities.

Angeles City fashion designer Philip D. Torresโ€™ Pidayit fashion designs will be featured in a pop-up store at the โ€œAn Exhibition of Artworksโ€ exhibit that will be held at the House of Representatives, South Wing from May 4 to14, 2026.

Pidayit is a Kapampangan term derived from "pidayit-dayit", meaning to put together, patch, or stitch together clothing materials to create something new, characteristically handmade, sustainable fashion pieces that reflect heritage, craftsmanship, and conscious design.

Torres, who popularized the design, describes his high-fashion, sustainable art of intricate garments as upcycling retaso (fabric scraps) into a โ€œfiesta of colorโ€, uniting different textures and materials, and metaphorically, uniting people.

Similar to quilting, Pidayit is a specific Kapampangan art form, sometimes evoking memories of home economics sewing projects. While quilting is often used for bedding or blankets, Pidayit is primarily used to create intricate shawls, jackets, dresses, and high-fashion accessories

Organized by Congressional Spouses Foundation Inc. with M Galerie, the exhibition brings together Filipino creatives in support of impactful causes, a celebration of artistry with a deeper purpose.

A research team from the Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) documented a rare flower within the Aurora Memorial National Park in the Sierra Madre range in Maria Aurora, Aurora Province recently, marking the second recorded occurrence of the bloom in two consecutive years.

The research team found the flower, a Rafflesia lagascae, during a field visit to support biodiversity conservation efforts in the protected area.

The species belongs to the Rafflesia genus, known for producing the worldโ€™s largest flowers Rafflesia arnoldii, with Rafflesia lagascae among its smaller yet ecologically significant members because of its strict habitat requirements.

Rafflesia lagascae is a rare, parasitic "co**se flower" endemic to the mountains of Luzon, with occurrences reported in Abra, Aurora, Cagayan, Laguna, and Quezon. Known for its small, saucer-sized, reddish-brown blooms with white warts, it emits a foul odor to attract pollinators. It relies on Tetrastigma vines for survival without roots or leaves.

Rafflesia lagascae blooms are relatively ephemeral, with the flower developing over months but lasting for only a few days once opened.

ASCOT President Renato Reyes explained that research is vital in strengthening environmental protection and community awareness in ecologically sensitive areas.

Reyes said the continued documentation of the rare flower species in Aurora Memorial National Park adds to conservation efforts aimed at protecting the provinceโ€™s unique biodiversity.

He said the presence of the flower in the Sierra Madre mountain range is an indicator of a healthy, undisturbed ecosystem, which underscores the need to exert more efforts to protect forest ecosystems where such species thrive and assist in efforts to highlight the need for habitat protection.

Reyes encouraged visitors to practice responsible tourism and coordinate with local authorities to help preserve the regionโ€™s natural heritage and reiterated that the collection, disturbance, or poaching of Rafflesia and other protected species is strictly prohibited.
