A patient with 2 months history of bleeding (fresh blood) from the lower GI tract consulted. Patient advised colonoscopy for evaluation.

A large pedunculated polyp was seen during colonoscopy and was removed by doing polypectomy.

Polyps can cause bleeding and if left unattended can develop to malignancy. This patient can be spared from surgery due to the early detection of the lesion and its removal. You also need to remember that follow up after the procedures are very important for monitoring.

If you have signs of lower GI bleeding, sudden weight loss, change in bowel habits, change in caliber of stools, get a consult from a gastroenterologist and schedule a colonoscopy.

If you are 45-50 years old and above without symptoms consult your gastroenterologist for screening colonoscopy.

Do you have GERD? Do you know what kind of food you can and you can't eat? As a doctor who has GERD I also had difficulty in getting the right diet for me that will save me from the symptoms of GERD. I learned that each and everyone of us have different pain thresholds and what can be painful to you may not be painful to me. One should not always compare what works with others but rather focus on what works for his or her self. I discovered the variety of foods that we can eat even with the limitations of GERD is still very vast and with creativity can be a delicious experience. An endoscopy is an instrument used to evaluate the gastrointestinal tract. It is a long tube with fiberoptics and a camera at the end. An upper GI endoscopy or an EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) is used to evaluate the essophagus, stomach and duodenum. This is the test done for patients with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) to directly evaluate the GI tract. The scope is inserted through the mouth up to he level of desired evaluation. There are different indications to do upper GI endoscopy in patients with GERD such as persistent symptoms even on therapy, long-standing abdominal pain, anemia, difficulty swallowing, painful swallowing and weight loss among others.
