Mambukal Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary in Murcia, Negros Occidental, is considered one of the oldest resorts in the Philippines because it was discovered in 1923 as a cool mountain getaway for the americans, provincial officials and local sugar barons. Famous for its natural therapeutic sulfur hot springs powered by Kanlaon Volcano, its status as a premier health and recreation site was officially protected by national law in 1957.
The resort's crown jewel, the Ishiwata Bath House, recently received the prestigious Tourism Pillars Award at the Philippine Tourism Awards. Built in 1927 by Japanese architect Kokichi Paul Ishiwata, this historic structure is the resort's oldest standing building and was honored for its century-long role in shaping the cultural and historical fabric of Philippine eco-tourism.
