PCOS has officially been renamed to PMOS โ Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome โ following an international consensus published in The Lancet.
The change was made because the term โpolycystic o***y syndromeโ was considered misleading. Many patients diagnosed with PCOS do not actually have ovarian cysts, while the condition itself involves broader endocrine and metabolic abnormalities beyond the ovaries.
PMOS aims to better reflect the full spectrum of the disease, which has been associated with insulin resistance, irregular menstruation, hyperandrogenism, infertility, obesity, dyslipidemia, and increased cardiovascular and diabetes risk.
Current diagnostic approaches and treatment principles remain largely unchanged for now, and the term PCOS will likely continue to be widely used during the transition period.
