We cannot wait for another tragedy before we act.

School violence is a public health issue that demands prevention, not just response. As emphasized by the PPS and PSAMS, building safe schools requires open communication, positive parenting, mental health support, early identification of risk, and a community that works together for every child.

One of the most important yet often overlooked preventive measures is routine annual adolescent health screening beginning at 10 years of age. These visits provide a safe space to identify concerns such as bullying, emotional distress, substance use, violence exposure, and other psychosocial risks early before they become crises.

Prevention begins when adolescents are listened to and truly feel heard.💚

Annual influenza vaccinations reduced the risk for flu-related hospitalizations and medical visits for children by as much as two thirds, according to new research in Pediatrics.

However, researchers also found that less than half of the children received the immunization between 2021 and 2024. The 2024-2025 influenza season was among the deadliest for children in decades outside of the pandemic, with 280 flu-related deaths, according to the CDC.
