Bis*xuality is romantic attraction, s*xual attraction, or s*xual behavior toward both males and females,[1][2][3] or romantic or s*xual attraction to people of any s*x or gender identity; this latter aspect is sometimes alternatively termed pans*xuality.[4][5][6]
The term bis*xuality is mainly used in the context of human attraction to denote romantic or s*xual feelings toward both men and women,[1][2][3] and the concept is one of the three main classifications of s*xual orientation along with heteros*xuality and homos*xuality, which are each parts of the heteros*xual–homos*xual continuum. A bis*xual identity does not necessarily equate to equal s*xual attraction to both s*xes; commonly, people who have a distinct but not exclusive s*xual preference for one s*x over the other also identify themselves as bis*xual.[7]
Bis*xuality has been observed in various human societies[8] and elsewhere in the animal kingdom[9][10][11] throughout recorded history. The term bis*xuality, however, like the terms hetero- and homos*xuality, was coined in the 19th century.[12]
