28 May 2026, Cagayan de Oro City — National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region X, led by Nutrition Program Coordinator and Officer-in-Charge Reginaldo T. Guillen, paid a courtesy visit to Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office (DA RFO) X Regional Executive Director (RED) Jose Apollo Y. Pacamalan. The meeting, held last 5 May 2026, aimed to bolster strategic ties for the Regional Search for Best Garden of Go, Grow and Glow (G4) in Northern Mindanao, 2026 Nutrition Month Celebration, among other concerns.

The said visit was assisted by Nutrition Officers (NOs) II Keishe Jan T. Aban and Patrick John D. Gonzales, together with National Urban and Peri-Urban Program (NUPAP) Personnel-in-Charge Ronald Allan Camaddo. NPC Guillen elaborated on the G4 initiative in the region since its pioneer search last 2024 for the Household Category. He extended his gratitude to DA RFO X for the provision of technical guidance, and gardening supplies as tokens for the winners and finalists during the past two years.

RED Pacamalan related the initiative to the agency’s existing programs and suggested aligning the targeting/resource prioritization (improved information and food accessibility) to poor and nutritionally-at-risk households. Through targeting, it can reduce food insecurity and reduce cases of malnutrition in Northern Mindanao.

NPC Guillen shared that Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte are the priority provinces under the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2023-2028. Further, he explained that these areas were identified based on the malnutrition and poverty rates, including the incidence of teenage pregnancy. Camiguin and Misamis Occidental recorded to have the highest malnutrition rates among the five provinces based on the 2025 Regional Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus Results.

RED Pacamalan checked whether the LGUs identified with high malnutrition cases have received greater allocation to existing DA RFO X’s agricultural programs and have operational facilities/infrastructure for agriculture, thus linking nutrition with agriculture. Additionally, he recommended nutrition as one of the indicators of NUPAP and High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP). As ways forward, RED Pacamalan requested the data for disaggregated malnutrition cases in Region X. Through the visit, he highlighted the importance of nutrition data in decision-making and planning purposes.

With the presentation of the 2026 Nutrition Month, RED Pacamalan reaffirmed support for the celebration, with focus on food security, poverty alleviation and improvement of nutritional status.

NNC Region X aims to deepen collaboration with DA RFO X, being the Vice Chair of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) X and key agencies in the implementation of RA 11148 or the Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-nanay Act. 1 June 2026, Cagayan de Oro City — As part of intensifying the “movement” character of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Northern Mindanao, network members coming from the Academe, Business, Civil Society Organization and Youth sectors convened for the First Semester Meeting last 25 May 2025 at De Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. Academe Network Convenor Helen E. Panganiban presided over the meeting on behalf of Nutrition Program Coordinator and Officer-in-Charge Reginaldo T. Guillen.

Nutrition Officer (NO) II Patrick John D. Gonzales discussed the updates of the Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition (RPAN) 2023-2028 to the members. The SUN Movement Northern Mindanao is responsible for providing inputs to the RPAN based on their concern in contributing to addressing malnutrition in the region. He informed the members to update their indicated projects, programs and activities (PPAs) and submit the copy of their accomplishment report to the Secretariat, including the capacity map requested.

In strengthening the role and mandate of the National Nutrition Council (NNC), NO II Gonzales presented the implementing guidelines for RA 11148 or the Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act. SUN is included in the formulation of the development of a comprehensive sustainable strategy for the First 1000 Days (F1K) of life. He encouraged the members to be part of the multisectoral engagement, advocacy and social mobilization activities related to F1K in Region X.

Part of the agenda is the expansion of SUN Movement NM members, where NO II Gonzales presented the updated member directory. Business Network Convenor Nenita M. Tan suggested inviting more stakeholders to increase engagement and convergence to nutrition programs, especially during NNC Region X-led activities.

Updates on the SUN Business Network (SBN) Philippines strategic planning were elaborated by Ms. Tan through the “Nourish and Connect” program of Best Friend Goodies. Part of the products shown are the nutripacks, hot meals and hybrid products, where she shared the advantages and disadvantages of the manufactured products. Nutrient content analysis, health metrics, program audits, and determination of nutritional status were needed to monitor and evaluate the program.

NO II Gonzales reminded the members to provide inputs for the drafted program of activities for the 2026 SUN Learning Visit at Best Friend Goodies Processing Plant and Northern Mindanao Medical Center and J.R. Borja Hospital Milk Banks. He persuaded everyone to participate in region-led nutrition activities.

NNC Region X will intensify participation and contributions of different SUN members in the operationalization of the P/RPAN 2023-2028 and align their efforts in ensuring a cohesive and efficient approach in improving nutritional outcomes at the regional level. The Pabasa sa Nutrisyon Training was successfully conducted in three batches from April 28 to 30, 2026 at Horizons Splash Resort in Baroy, Lanao del Norte, gathering key health and nutrition implementers from the municipality. Participants included Municipal Nutrition Committee Members, LGU-hired Human Resources for Health (HRH), Department of Health Human Resources for Health (DOH HRH) under the National Health Workforce Support System (NHWSS), Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), and Barangay Health Workers (BHWs). The activity aimed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and facilitation techniques necessary to effectively implement the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon in their respective communities.

The training was facilitated by resource persons who are Nutritionist-Dietitians from the Provincial Department of Health Office and the Provincial Health Office, who provided technical expertise and guided participants throughout the sessions.

The three-day training provided a comprehensive orientation on the proper conduct of the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, ensuring that participants clearly understood their roles as facilitators. A detailed discussion of the program’s ten (10) sessions, organized into four key modules, was carried out. Module 1 focused on promoting a balanced diet through eating a variety of foods. Module 2 tackled Hidden Hunger and Protein-Energy Malnutrition, emphasizing the importance of addressing micronutrient deficiencies. Module 3 highlighted the significance of backyard gardening and animal raising as sustainable sources of nutritious food. Meanwhile, Module 4 covered practical aspects of planning, purchasing, selecting, and preparing nutritious meals for the family.

To enhance learning and engagement, the training incorporated interactive activities for each session using the Pabasa Play and Learn Kit. These hands-on exercises allowed participants to practice facilitating sessions in a participatory and learner-centered manner, better preparing them for actual implementation at the community level.

Feedback from participants highlighted that the training was highly interactive and the activities were enjoyable. Many expressed confidence that parents and caregivers in the community would also appreciate and actively participate in the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon sessions once implemented at the barangay level.

The activity concluded with a strong commitment from all participants to cascade the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon in their respective areas in the following month, ensuring a wider reach and greater impact in promoting proper nutrition practices among households across the municipality.

𝗛𝘂𝘄𝗮𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗶 "𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮" 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗸𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗼!
