FCIC Empowers Barangay Health Workers Through Maternal and Newborn Care Training.
The Franciscan College of the Immaculate Conception (FCIC), Community Extension Services with the collaboration of Abbys prolifers Club (College of Midwifery) successfully hosted the Community-Driven Basin Care: Maternal and Newborn Health Training & Workshop for Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) on March 7, 2026, at RLE Laboratory FCIC campus.
The one-day program aimed to strengthen grassroots healthcare by equipping BHWs with essential knowledge and skills in maternal and newborn care. The event began with a welcome talk by Mrs. Aisa C. Porcare, RM, BSM, MMPHA, followed by a series of lectures and demonstrations led by faculty members, student instructors, and coaches.
Sessions covered a wide range of topics, including pregnancy overview, antenatal care essentials, intrapartum and immediate newborn care, postpartum care and immunization, as well as family planning and neonatal care. Each segment provided practical insights, from identifying danger signs during pregnancy and postpartum to safe delivery practices, newborn resuscitation principles, and counseling on family planning methods. Interactive presentations and ice breakers kept participants engaged, while expert coaches such as Mrs. Gemma Quiamco, RM, BSM, MMPHA and Mr. Noemel H. Picson, RN, RM, MMHA, ensured that the training was both informative and hands-on.
The workshop highlighted FCIC’s commitment to extending healthcare education beyond the classroom and into the community. By empowering BHWs with updated knowledge, FCIC strengthens the local health system and ensures that mothers and newborns in Baybay City and surrounding barangays receive timely, quality care. This initiative also reflects FCIC’s mission of fostering collaboration between students, faculty, and community health workers, positioning the institution as a pioneer in community-based health education.
The program concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Noemel Picson, who emphasized FCIC’s dedication to nurturing compassionate healthcare providers and supporting community-driven health initiatives. With this training, FCIC continues to advocate maternal and child health, ensuring that every family in Leyte benefits from safe, informed, and accessible care.
