MASK UP! 😷

AIR QUALITY ALERT
(April 18, 2026)

CURRENT SITUATION

Air quality across Metro Manila has significantly deteriorated, with several areas now recording dangerous levels:

* 🔴 Acutely Unhealthy (AQI 201–300+)
* Marikina
* Valenzuela
* 🟠 Very Unhealthy (AQI 151–200)
* Manila (Puregold Tayuman area)
* Caloocan
* Malabon
* Navotas
* Quezon City
* 🟡 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (AQI 101–150)
* San Juan
* Anda Circle (Manila)
* San Sebastian Residences
* Sta. Ana Hospital area

WHAT’S CAUSING THIS?

The poor air quality is mainly linked to the ongoing fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill, burning since April 10.

Key contributing factors:

* Landfill Fire Smoke – releasing toxic pollutants like methane, nitrogen dioxide, and fine particles (PM2.5)
* Thermal Inversion – traps smoke and pollution close to the ground
* Vehicular Emissions – adds to pollution already trapped in the air
* Difficult Fire Response – landfill location (offshore island) limits firefighting efforts

⚠️ PHIVOLCS clarification: This is NOT related to Taal Volcano (no volcanic smog/vog involved)

HEALTH RISKS

Exposure to high PM2.5 levels may cause:

* Eye, nose, and throat irritation
* Coughing and difficulty breathing
* Worsening asthma or heart/lung conditions

Long-term exposure is linked to:

* Cardiovascular disease
* Chronic respiratory illness

✅ SAFETY ADVISORY

The Department of Health (DOH) and local DRRM offices recommend:

* Wear N95/KN95 masks when outdoors
* Stay indoors (especially children, elderly, pregnant women, and those with health conditions)
* Keep windows/doors closed
* Avoid outdoor exercise or heavy activity
* Stay hydrated

📌 KEY TAKEAWAY

This is a serious but temporary environmental and health situation driven by a landfill fire + weather conditions trapping pollution. Precautions are strongly advised until air quality improves.

⚠️ Disclaimer
This post is for informational purposes only. Air quality levels may change rapidly depending on weather conditions and firefighting progress. Follow official LGU and national agency advisories for real-time updates.

Swimmer’s Ear: Protect Your Ears This Summer 🏊‍♂️

Swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) is an infection of the outer ear caused by trapped water that allows bacteria to grow.

How to avoid:
• Dry ears well after swimming
• Tilt head to remove trapped water
• Avoid inserting cotton buds or objects into the ear

Watch for ear pain, itching, or discharge.
