In our pursuit of anti-aging, we sometimes fall for misleading advertising. Too many people become victims of illegal practitioners, the non-doctors, who inject unknown substances they call “collagen.” Patients can develop granulomas that destroy the normal architecture of the tissue.

In this case, the patient was injected with an unknown filler that migrated into her upper eyelids. The lesions are hard, non-tender, and slow-growing in both upper lids. I’m relieved the material did not extend into the pretarsal portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle, because involvement there would be much more difficult to correct.

Please be careful when choosing an injector. Make sure they are a licensed, trained physician experienced in filler injections. Confirm the treatment will be performed in a medical facility, and request a clear outline of potential risks and aftercare. Opting for a cheaper, non-medical provider can lead to serious complications and costly corrective procedures. Your face is your identity, invest in it wisely.
