PREGNANT AND YOUR BREASTS ARE LEAKING MILK WITH PAIN? HERE’S WHY 😳👇
Are you pregnant and noticing a milk-like discharge from your breasts, along with tenderness or pain? Don’t panic! These changes can be a normal part of pregnancy. Let’s look at what may be happening in your body. 👇
🤰 WHY ARE YOUR BREASTS PRODUCING MILK?
During pregnancy, hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin prepare your breasts for breastfeeding.
As your breasts develop more milk-producing glands, you may notice a thick, yellowish fluid called colostrum. This is the first milk your baby receives, and it is packed with nutrients and antibodies that help protect your newborn.
Colostrum can sometimes leak from the breasts during pregnancy, even before delivery. This is usually normal and does not necessarily mean that labour is starting.
😣 WHY ARE YOUR BREASTS PAINFUL?
Breast tenderness or pain is also common during pregnancy and may happen because of:
• Hormonal changes that make your breasts more sensitive
• Growth of the milk-producing glands and breast tissue
• Increased blood flow and stretching of the breast tissue
• Breast enlargement, which can cause heaviness and discomfort
However, not every breast problem during pregnancy is simply due to hormones. An infection such as mastitis can also cause breast pain, redness, warmth, swelling, and sometimes fever.
🚨 WHEN SHOULD YOU SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION?
Speak with your doctor or midwife if you notice:
1. Severe or worsening breast pain
2. A breast that becomes red, hot, or swollen
3. Fever or chills
4. A new lump that does not go away
5. Bloody or unusual ni**le discharge
These symptoms should not simply be assumed to be normal pregnancy changes.
💕 WHAT CAN YOU DO?
To help with normal pregnancy-related breast discomfort:
1. Wear a comfortable, supportive maternity bra.
2. Try a cool compress to ease tenderness.
3. Avoid repeatedly squeezing your ni**les or expressing colostrum unless your maternity care provider advises you to do so.
4. Talk to your doctor or midwife before taking any medication for pain.
Thinking about antenatal colostrum expression? Talk to your maternity care provider first, especially if you have a high-risk pregnancy or a history of preterm labour.
