Reposting one of my BIGGEST pieces yet! I had creative freedom over this design which is really what gets me going creatively. The piece is inspired by the concept of life after death.

In the design are classical filipino motifs, at the center of which is a giant moth. Filipinos believe that when we see a moth in our house, the moth is actually a loved one that has departed coming into this plane of existence to visit us. Thus, we regard moths with respect and try not to harm them in fear of "gaba".

As we all know, some moth species have natural wing patterns that mimic the eyes of large predators. These patterns are defense mechanisms of moths to ward off danger.

With these in mind, the overall concept of the design represents how our ancestors, our dearly departed, continue to watch our backs. It serves as an "anting-anting" to ward off danger, especially those that we cannot see. It is a reminder that we are loved and loved deeply even beyond death.
