Bats are among the most important wildlife reservoirs of the rabies virus. Any direct contact with a bat is generally managed as a Category III exposure and may require immediate post-exposure prophylaxis, including rabies vaccine and, when indicated, rabies immunoglobulin.

An 11-year-old Canadian boy died from rabies weeks after waking with a bat on his face, in a case that doctors say underscores the importance of seeking immediate medical attention after any direct contact with a bat, even when there are no visible bite marks.

According to a report published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday, the previously healthy boy from Ontario died after developing rabies following a bat encounter at a cottage in northern Ontario.

The incident reportedly occurred in the summer of 2024.

TANONG: Dapat bang paduguin ang sugat kapag nakagat ng hayop?

Marami pa rin ang naniniwala na kailangang paduguin ang sugat para mailabas ang rabies virus. Ito ay mali. Ang pinakamahalagang first aid ay ang tamang paghuhugas ng sugat.

ANO ANG DAPAT GAWIN?
✅Hugasan agad ang sugat gamit ang sabon sa loob ng 15 minuto
✅Lagyan ng antiseptic solution kagaya ng alcohol o povidone-iodine (Betadine)
✅Magpa konsulta sa Animal Bite Center para sa agarang bakuna
