Who says learning can't be fun?

Our Internal Medicine residents had a great time participating in the Inaugural IDS Quiz Bowl led by our Infectious Disease Consultant, Dr. Gamaliel Garcia.

In these times when burn-out is a key factor in residency training, our department has also explored effective learning strategies that foster critical thinking, collaboration, camaraderie, and sportsmanship.

When you are into critical thinking and solving complex diseases, then Internal Medicine might be best for you. đź’“

Congratulations to the Champion:

Dr. Wilfredo Mata Jr
Dr. Essel Suan-Bangalando

Grit + Grace in the Pioneer Batch of Internal Medicine Residents of NOPH

Dr. Wilfredo T. Mata, Jr. was among the members of the Visayas Group 2 who finished Top 6 among 12 groups of participants nationwide in the Dr. Adrian C. Peña P*P Medical Quiz Contest held last May 4, 2026 during the 56th P*P Annual Convention in SMX Convention Center, Pasay City.

This year's quiz format utilized group system among qualified accredited training institutions fostering collaboration and friendship. Dr. Nicole Felice Correos served as Coach for the Visayas Group 2 guiding the participants in the preparation process.

It is noteworthy to share that Dr. Wilfredo T. Mata, Jr. was one of the two pioneer residents in the department in the pre-accredited training stage. He will not only finish residency training soon but he will always be part of the formative years of the program anchored in faith, grit and grace.

Congratulations and we are immensely proud of your achievement. 👏

COLON CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

In celebration of Colon Cancer Awareness Month, the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital, in collaboration with the Philippine College of Physicians, our local gastroenterologists and oncologists, and our partners from Silliman University Medical Center and ACE Dumaguete Doctors, Inc., held a two-part lecture series last March 17, 2026. The first session was conducted at the Internal Medicine Conference Room of NOPH with the participation of government employees, while the second session was brought to the Outpatient Department to engage and educate our patients. The activity aimed to raise awareness on colon cancer, highlighting the importance of early screening, prevention, and timely consultation.

This initiative was led by our Gastroenterology consultants, Dr. Maria Joscel Torres, Dr. Johanna Lei Bandoy, and Dr. Elizabeth Heceta-Moleta, together with our Oncology team, Dr. Angelica Gallespen, Dr. Janine Mendoza-Torres, and Dr. Gale Rizzae Alcala. We are also grateful for the unwavering support of our Internal Medicine leadership, Dr. Davie G. Villanueva, Dr. Kristine Gayle Suarez Pastorpile, and Dr. Venus G. Saceda. Through efforts like this, we continue to bring health education closer to our community and strengthen our commitment to better patient care.

RESEARCH PROTOCOL PRESENTATION

Yesterday’s Research Protocol Presentation by our Level II residents turned out to be a very insightful and grounded session. Six residents presented their proposed studies in a hybrid format, with some gathered at the Internal Medicine Conference Room of NOPH and others joining via Zoom. What stood out was how each research topic was rooted in the realities of our province, focusing on identifying and better understanding the challenges we encounter in our local healthcare setting.

We’re truly grateful to our consultants who were present and actively engaged in the discussions. Their inputs were thoughtful, practical, and helped shape each protocol into something more feasible and meaningful. It was a good reminder that our research does not just stay on paper. It has the potential to directly improve how we care for our patients and address the gaps we see every day.
