Feeding the future by supporting our roots! ๐ŸŒพ

On August 17, 2026, our Mayor, the Municipal Nutrition Committee, and the World Food Programme (WFP) joined forces to host the Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) orientation and workshop. This program bridges the gap between child health and agricultural growth by sourcing fresh produce directly from local smallholder farmers for school mealsโ€”nourishing our students while boosting our local economy!

World Obesity Day 2026: โ€œ8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesityโ€

Every March 4, the world observes World Obesity Day to raise awareness about obesity as a serious public health concern influenced by food systems, environment, and access to healthcare. Led by the World Obesity Federation, the 2026 campaign carries the theme โ€œ8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity,โ€ emphasizing the need to reduce stigma and support people living with obesity through compassionate, evidence-based care.

According to the World Health Organization, obesity is defined as excessive fat accumulation that poses a significant health risk. It often results from an imbalance between calorie intake and physical activity and is commonly identified by a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Obesity increases the risk of noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.

In the Philippines, the 2023 National Nutrition Survey of the DOSTโ€“Food and Nutrition Research Institute shows that overweight and obesity affect millions of Filipinos across all age groups. Around 17.3% of adults are overweight and 39.8% are obese, while children, teenagers, and older adults are also increasingly affected. Overall, an estimated 27 million Filipinos are living with overweight or obesity.

To address this growing concern, the National Nutrition Council promotes actions under the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2023โ€“2028, encouraging Filipinos to adopt healthier diets, increase physical activity, and follow balanced meal guides like Pinggang Pinoy. These efforts are supported by the Philippine Strategic Plan in Addressing Obesity and Other Metabolic Disorders, which focuses on prevention, management, policy development, and research.

Preventing and managing obesity involves eating more fruits and vegetables, limiting processed foods high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, staying physically active, getting enough sleep, and consulting healthcare professionals such as Registered Nutritionist-Dietitians.

Addressing obesity requires collective actionโ€”from individuals and families to communities, health professionals, and policymakers. World Obesity Day 2026 reminds us that everyone has a role in promoting healthier lifestyles and ensuring better access to nutrition and health services.

Let us act now for a healthier and stronger Philippines.
