The Department of Parasitology of the College of Public Health, University of the Philippines Manila, successfully conducted the “Parasitology Laboratory Exposure of PLMun College of Education Students” on May 8, 2026. The whole-day educational activity brought together 37 Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Science students from the College of Teacher Education, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa (PLMun), accompanied by their Dean, Dr. Fermae Tamayao.

The activity was organized at the request of the PLMun College of Teacher Education to provide meaningful experiential learning opportunities that would bridge theoretical concepts in microbiology and parasitology with practical laboratory practices and public health applications. The initiative aimed to expose students to parasitological laboratory procedures and diagnostic techniques, deepen their understanding of infectious diseases and their prevention, and strengthen their appreciation of laboratory safety, ethics, and scientific inquiry.

The program officially opened with an orientation delivered by Dr. Jose Ma. M. Angeles, Chair of the Department of Parasitology. The morning sessions featured a series of lectures by faculty experts from the department. Assistant Professor Myra S. Mistica discussed the overview of nematodes, while Dr. Angeles delivered lectures on cestodes, trematodes, and protozoans. Dr. Arlene G. Bertuso also provided an overview of vectors of vector-borne diseases, highlighting their importance in public health and disease transmission.

In the afternoon, students viewed video presentations of parasitological techniques facilitated by Ms. Maria Luz B. Belleza. This was followed by hands-on demonstrations of parasitological samples conducted by Ms. Belleza together with Ms. Katrina Theresa M. Balboa. Through these activities, students observed diagnostic specimens and laboratory methods commonly used to detect and identify medically important parasites. The event concluded with a synthesis and feedback session, during which participants reflected on their learning experiences and insights gained from the exposure activity.

The educational exposure provided future science educators with a firsthand appreciation of the role of parasitology and public health in disease prevention and community health promotion.

The research work of one of our faculty, Dr. Jose Ma. M. Angeles was featured in this article of WHO-TDR. This project, funded by TDR's Impact Grants for Regional Priorities, demonstrated that recombinant antigen ELISA (RA-ELISA) offers a more sensitive and practical alternative to stool microscopy in areas nearing elimination.

Implementation research supported by TDR’s Impact Grants have generated practical, locally grounded solutions to strengthen the control of two neglected tropical diseases— schistosomiasis and trachoma—across Latin America, Africa and Asia. Together, these projects show how community enga...
