Following the June 8, 2026, earthquake, the Nutrition Cluster was activated to protect displaced families (June 9, 2026). The team focuses on implementing Nutrition in Emergencies (NiEm) protocols to screen individuals in evacuation centers for malnutrition, prioritizing vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.

To execute this vital mission, dedicated nutrition cluster teams from Barangay Calumpang and Barangay Lagao deployed to their respective evacuation centers using the specialized Nutrition in Emergencies Nutrition Assessment (NINA) tool. Responders successfully mapped out the displaced populations to identify vulnerable groups and immediately administered life-saving medical and nutritional interventions on the ground. The Barangay Health Aides (BHA) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) conducted rapid Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) screenings on children to instantly evaluate them for acute malnutrition, distributed targeted food supplies to families in need, and provided critical Vitamin A supplementation to fortify young immune systems against the increased threat of post-disaster infections.

Hello mga Ka-Nutrisyon! ๐Ÿ’š
As we conclude our series on the First 1000 Days (F1KD), let us take a closer look at the essential services guaranteed under Republic Act 11148, also known as the The First 1000 Daysโ€”from pregnancy until a child reaches two years oldโ€”represent the most critical window for growth, brain development, and lifelong health. Recognizing this, the law ensures that mothers and young children receive comprehensive health and nutrition support during this crucial period.
One of the key provisions of the law is the additional financial support provided to families through the 4Ps F1KD cash grant. Eligible beneficiaries receive an extra โ‚ฑ350 per month to help cover maternal and child health expenses. This assistance encourages families to prioritize proper nutrition, regular health checkups, and essential healthcare services.
RA 11148 also strengthens maternal health services by ensuring that pregnant women receive continuous care from pregnancy to the post-partum stage. This includes regular prenatal checkups, antenatal care, safe and facility-based deliveries, and post-natal visits that help monitor both mother and child. Mothers are also provided with micronutrient supplements such as iron, folic acid, and calcium to support healthy pregnancies and reduce health risks.
For children aged zero to two years old, the law guarantees access to vital health services that promote survival and healthy development. These include essential newborn care, complete immunization and vaccination, and regular growth monitoring through weight and height checks. As infants grow, they are supported with age-appropriate and nutrient-rich complementary feeding starting at six months, along with deworming services to protect them from infections that can affect their growth and nutrition.
Beyond health services, RA 11148 highlights the importance of education and community support. Mothers and caregivers are provided with breastfeeding counseling, nutrition education, and assistance in establishing lactation stations. These initiatives empower families with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about nutrition and childcare.
The First 1000 Days only happen once, but their impact lasts a lifetime. By supporting mothers and children during this crucial stage, we are nurturing a healthier, smarter, and stronger generation. Let us continue to raise awareness, champion proper nutrition, and work together to give every child the best possible start in lifeโ€”because investing in the First 1000 Days is truly investing in the future of our nation.
