WHAT OIL ARE YOU USING? 🧐
You may be avoiding sugar, watching what you eat, and choosing “healthier” foods…
but have you ever checked the OIL?
And I’m not just talking about the oil you use for cooking.
Check the ingredients of your chips, biscuits, crackers, instant noodles, mayonnaise, dressings, sauces, baked goods and other packaged foods.
You’ll often find one ingredient:
VEGETABLE OIL.
But “vegetable oil” is not one specific oil. It can come from soybean, corn, canola, sunflower, palm—or a blend.
And some commonly used vegetable oils contain very high amounts of omega-6 linoleic acid:
🌽 Corn Oil: ~50–60%
🫘 Soybean Oil: ~50–55%
🌻 Regular Sunflower Oil: ~55–70%
🌼 Regular Safflower Oil: ~70–75%
Omega-6 is essential. But balance matters.
Today, we can get large amounts of omega-6 from cooking oils, fried foods and packaged products, while getting relatively little omega-3 EPA and DHA.
Omega-3 helps produce compounds involved in regulating and resolving inflammation, while also supporting normal heart, brain and cell function.
And remember: oils high in polyunsaturated fats are more susceptible to oxidation, especially with prolonged or repeated high-temperature frying.
So next time you buy something, don’t just check the sugar.
CHECK THE OIL.
🥥 Choose your cooking oil carefully.
🐟 Get adequate omega-3 from fatty fish and other quality sources.
🥬 Eat more whole, minimally processed food.
🏷️ Read the ingredients of packaged foods.
Because you may not be pouring vegetable oil into your food…
but you could be eating it several times a day without realizing it.
KNOW YOUR OIL. KNOW YOUR FOOD.
