GOOD NEWS TO OFWs! ✈️🇵🇭
According to Department of Migrant Workers post on Facebook, 24 international airlines operating at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) now accept the digital OFW Pass, enabling eligible overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to present a QR-coded exit clearance at check-in instead of a printed Overseas Employment Certificate.

Through the Department of Migrant Workers' (DW) e-Verify system, participating airlines can verify an OFW's travel eligibility electronically and process the applicable terminal fee exemption or refund.

Among the participating carriers are Philippine Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Gulf Air, Oman Air, Ethiopian Airlines, Air Niugini, Kuwait Airways, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Singapore Airlines, Saudia Airlines, AirAsia, Air Canada, Air India, Asiana Airlines, Korean Air, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Thai Airways, ANA, Starlux Airlines, and Air Macau.

What are the consequences if a 🇵🇭 Filipino expat run away from their employer in 📌Saudi Arabia?

Read] When a 🇵🇭Filipino expat runs away🏃🏻🏃‍♀️ from their employer in 🇸🇦Saudi Arabia—a situation commonly known as 👉Huroob (absconding)

—they immediately become an illegal resident under Saudi labor law. The consequences are severe, though recent reforms have created specific pathways for resolution.

Here is what happens:

1. Legal and Immediate Consequences

Invalidation of Iqama: The Iqama (residency permit) is automatically cancelled or invalidated, making the stay in Saudi Arabia illegal.

Huroob Status: The employer files an "Absent from Work" report through the Qiwa or Absher platform.

Loss of Protection & Benefits: The employment contract is effectively terminated, and the worker loses their right to unpaid salaries and end-of-service benefits.

Arrest and Detention: Runaway workers are subject to arrest by police or immigration patrols and will be sent to deportation centers (Tharheel).

Deportation and Ban: Runaways are deported from Saudi Arabia and usually face a 3-5 year re-entry ban.

2. Recent Updates and Grace Periods (2025–2026)
Saudi Arabia has introduced reforms to protect workers from abusive employers who abuse the Huroob system:

✅60-Day Grace Period:
When a Huroob report is filed, the worker has a 60-day window (after the report is filed) to regularize their status.

✅Transfer or Exit:
During this 60-day window, workers may be able to transfer their sponsorship to a new employer via the Qiwa platform or apply for a Final Exit Visa legally.

✅Cancellation without Employer Consent:
The Huroob status can be cancelled without the employer's approval if the employer's facility is in the "Red Zone," the facility is non-existent, or the worker has not been paid.

3. What a Filipino Expat Should Do
If you have run away, it is crucial to act immediately to avoid long-term detention:

💁‍♂️Check Status:
Use the Qiwa or Absher platform to confirm if the Huroob report has been filed.

💁‍♂️Contact the Philippine Embassy/POLO:
Riyadh/Eastern Region: ☎️+966569893301, +966 50 285 0944 (POLO).
Jeddah/Western Region: ☎️+966 55 521 9613 (ATN), +966 56 981 9720 (POLO).

💁‍♂️File a Case: If you ran away due to abuse, non-payment, or mistreatment, file a complaint with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) or the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO)

💁‍♂️Use the 60-day Window: Attempt to secure a new sponsor or apply for a final exit visa immediately through the MHRSD if you are within the 60-day grace period.

4. Special Provisions for Domestic Workers

🔑Six-month Amnesty:
Saudi Arabia has extended a six-month grace period for runaway domestic workers (house drivers, maids, house managers) to regularize their status or exit via the Musaned platform (effective through late 2025/early 2026).

📌Penalty for False Reporting: Employers who falsely report a Huroob to avoid paying salaries or to penalize a worker can be fined up to SAR 20,000.

Disclaimer: This information is based on the situation as of early 2026. Rules in Saudi Arabia can change, and enforcement may vary. It is highly advised to seek assistance from the Philippine Embassy or a legal professional in KSA.
