Rabies is a deadly virus that attacks the brain and nervous system. It spreads through the bite, scratch, or saliva of an infected animal.

The virus enters through a wound and quietly travels through the nerves to the brain, where it causes severe symptoms like fever, confusion, difficulty swallowing, paralysis, and fear of water. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal.

💉 Rabies is 100% preventable with immediate wound washing and timely vaccination.

👉 If bitten or scratched by an animal, wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical help immediately.

Rabies is deadly once symptoms appear—but it is 100% preventable with early treatment. The virus can stay silent for days or months, giving a false sense of safety.

Do not wait for signs like fever, confusion, or difficulty swallowing—by then, it’s almost always too late.

Act immediately: wash the wound thoroughly and seek medical care for anti-rabies vaccines. Early action saves lives.

What is Rabies? (Simple Explanation)

Rabies is a serious and often deadly disease caused by a virus that affects the brain and nervous system of both humans and animals. It is usually spread through the bite, scratch, or saliva of an infected animal such as dogs, cats, bats, and other mammals.

🧠 How Rabies Affects the Nervous System

1. Entry through the body
The virus enters through broken skin, most commonly from a bite or scratch.

2. Silent movement through nerves
Instead of entering the bloodstream right away, the virus travels slowly along the nerves toward the brain. This stage can take weeks or even months, which is why symptoms may not appear immediately.

3. Damage to the brain
Once it reaches the brain, the virus causes swelling (encephalitis), leading to severe symptoms like:

* Fever and headache
* Confusion and restlessness
* Fear of water (hydrophobia)
* Trouble swallowing and breathing
* Seizures or paralysis

4. Very high risk once symptoms start
After symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. That’s why early treatment is extremely important.

💉 The Good News
Rabies can be completely prevented if action is taken right away. Washing the wound properly and getting post-exposure vaccines on time can save your life.

👉 Important Reminder:
If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical help immediately. Rabies is an emergency—don’t delay.

❓ “How many shots will I need?”

This is one of the most common questions at bite centers—and the answer depends on your level of exposure and medical history.

💉 For first-time patients (no prior rabies vaccination):

You will usually need a series of 4 anti-rabies vaccine shots given on:
Day 0 (first visit)
Day 3
Day 7
Day 28
In some cases (especially severe bites or high-risk exposures), rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is also given on Day 0. This provides immediate protection while your body builds its own antibodies from the vaccine.
💉 For previously vaccinated individuals:
You may only need 2 booster shots on:
Day 0
Day 3

No immunoglobulin is needed in this case.
⚠️ The number of shots can vary depending on:
Type of exposure (bite, scratch, lick on broken skin)
Severity and location of the wound
Animal status (pet, stray, vaccinated, under observation)
Your vaccination history
🧼 Important Reminder:

Don’t wait for symptoms. Rabies is 100% preventable if treated early—but almost always fatal once symptoms appear.
👉 When in doubt, visit a bite center immediately and get assessed by a healthcare professional.
